[Good afternoon, friends. The voice that pops into people's head this fine afternoon is Shiro's -- bright and cheerful and downright excited.

Why? Well, why not? After all, he's talking about something he enjoys! ...and it's not food, for once.]

Hi! Can you guys hear me? Yeah? Great! Anyway, for those of you I haven't met yet, I'm Shiro.

Okay so, with all the newcomers, and everyone settling in, I figured I should try to be a little useful. Back home, when I was younger, I was a scientist. I mean, marine biology isn't my specialty, but I'm figuring things out with that too. But what I do know how to use a lab, and how to analyze samples and substances.

So if anyone would like to learn anything about analyzing things in the lab, or how to use any of the equipment, I'd be happy to show people!

...and if you happened to want to bring snacks with you, that'd be great too! Okay, that's all, I think!

[Anyone who wants to take Shiro up on his offer without chitchat will find him bustling about the lab, poking through plant samples that he's gathered over his time here, humming to himself quietly.

Of course, it's possible that someone missed his broadcast entirely and just wandered in. Shiro will glance up with a grin.] Are you here for science? [SCIENCE!]

I'll have some things ready. Do you know anything about lab work to start with?

Umm, the stuff taught in high school, I guess? And I have a friend back home who's really into science and talking about forensics.

That's a good start then! So you know how to use a microscope and prepare slides maybe? That'll definitely come in handy.

Sorta. But I don't know all of it.

[Replying to broadcasts are for nerds. Who like science.

No, but were he not accustomed to Shiro's presence, he probably would have given him a forewarning. However, since he is too accustomed to Shiro's presence, he feels as though they've moved past that. Rather, he feels like he can just forego politeness. Friendship sure is nice??

When he enters the lab, it's with several thick books coiled in his tentacles.]

Shiro. [And a greeting.

He doesn't seem to be carrying snacks. Maybe. Who can tell, with Fukami?]

[Friendship sure is nice! BUT FRIENDSHIP WITH SNACKS IS BETTER FUKAMI. But as it is, Shiro beams when he hears that voice and turns to see Fukami. He lifts a hand to wave, head canting tot he side, curious now.] What've you got there?

[Lots of books? What're you up to, Fukami?] Are you here to learn lab technique? [Does he get to teach Fukami? He might make the octopal call him sensei!!!]

Perhaps. I had something else to ask of you first.

[Fukami steps further inside, lifting his tentacles to lay them on the nearest counter space.] I thought you may be able to help me with these. Some of the concepts are difficult without further context.

[And he thinks Shiro will be able to help him, if just to figure things out together. But these are certainly science books. One is technology, another medicine, part of their recent salvage from the Aurora. NO LIGHT READING FOR THIS OCTOPUS.

...Another tentacle pulls a container out of his jacket, with what looks to be seaweed chips inside. Delicious. These are a bribe.]

[A curious sound as Shiro goes over to look through the books, reading over the titles before looking back to Fukami. Wow yes, no light reading at all. But all pretty useful, right? He nods a bit before turning a smile on the octopus.] Yeah, I think I can probably help you figure these out. I think it'll be useful for both of us, right?

[...AND BRIBES. Fukami is the very best. Even if Shiro would've totally helped him without snacks. It'll be better help with snacks, because snacks are just energizing.] Let's start with this one. [He taps the technology book. More up his alley than medicine. But he thinks that he could certainly do with learning more about medicine too, so he's looking forward to that one.]

[He'll move to help himself to a seat, pulling one next to him for Shiro. He thought as much. With what he's picked up from Shiro here and there, he thought he might be the best to come to for this sort of thing.

Not that he's going to say that much. Can't have him getting an ego.]

Technology is the more difficult for me anyway. [Mind, he figured out the things in and around the base quickly enough, but he wants to know about how they really work.]

[ ok he would have replied to the network. but. but. he said meeting him at the lab would be okay, right? dave lifts a hand as he enters in a coolkid version of a wave. ]

Sup. [ where is all this mad science he's heard about? ] Uh, I brought some of that jelly stuff if you want some? Otherwise we are mad low on the snacky snackage.

[Shiro offers a smile and a wave of his own in greeting.] ...sup? [He answers. That's the correct reply, right? Kids these days, really.

Shiro perks up a bit.] That's pretty good! But you're right. There's way too few snacks, aren't there? We should do something about that. Actually, I've found a few good things that are good for eating. ...it's not gourmet, but if we can get more of them gathered, they're pretty good in a pinch.

[But he gestures for Dave to come over.] What's your name?

Dave. And yeah, there's like food to eat, but...if it's snacks, you want something more like chips or junk food, right? Not an option here.

[ UNFORTUNATELY. Man he misses chips. ]

Shiro, yeah? [ he'll come over on command, hands in his pockets, although after a second he thinks to like. de-captchalogue the promised jelly-things for shiro's perusal. ]

Chips would be great. Or something sweet... [A sigh, a wistful sigh. Shiro has no kitchen skills to speak of though, so he own't be concocting anything useful in the kitchen. He's pretty good in the lab at least, so this should go fine.]

Mm! Shiro. It's nice to meet you Dave. [A quick peek at the jelly things. Yes excellent.] But let's see, where should we start? Have you done any lab work before? Maybe in school?

[ a shrug, as he leans against the lab table, arms crossed. ]

I was home schooled? But I've always kinda thought science was the shit. Had a collection of dead things in jars, thought about maybe going into like. Dinosaurs. That kinda thing.

As to sweet, I could swear there's some kinda candy you can make from kelp?

[ Sanson's also kind of made his lab his second home. Only that he took a break to look around and look over certain people before he's coming back in. Having heard the broadcast, he has a much more bland reaction. ]

Yes. [ Pause. ] What are you working on?

[ Shiro hasn't touched the medical supplies, which means he's not really invested in this (yet). ]

[Shiro looks up and offers a smile before gesturing. Right now he's working on examining and classifying samples. Currently plants.] Looking over some of the things that've been collected, seeing if they're safe, first.

[Which is not as easy as it could be, if he were more familiar with the biological life here. ...or if his background were in botany or marine biology. But he's making decent progress, he likes to think.]

[ Shiro has a good amount of biohazard procedures down, from what Sanson can see. (Being from a time originally without said techniques has unfortunately made him a lot less familiar with them, so he can only guess.) The plants that the other is looking at doesn't seem too dangerous visibly either. ]

Well, if you want to dive right in...

[He gestures to a set of petri dishes and slides.] Those right there, I've been starting to prep for slides to examine under the microscopes.

[And then to expose to various known biologics, find out if they react.]

Sanson says little, instead moving over to look at what Shiro has already done. He knows how to cut slides, but anything other than that is out of his league. ]

I can do that, but I am not familiar with the procedures for testing. Please teach me.

[ despite the headaches lately, roderic had to admit the offer he had heard via telepathy was too tempting to pass up. he had been studying some samples himself since his arrival so seeing someone else's approach is intriguing enough for him to visit and lend a hand. ] Don't have snacks but I brought my notes of some research I've done in the past.

[Shiro lifts a hand to wave, surrounded by the samples and specimens that he's currently looking over. He perks up at the mention of research. Not snacks, but definitely interesting.]

Mm! I'd definitely like to look. I don't mind sharing mine either, if you're interested.

[Collaboration is important here, right? They're all working together to make this place survivable.]

Definitely interested. I know there must be some others who've been lookin' into this but never got a real chance to meet up with them.

[ due to his bad habit of keeping to himself. he's trying to work through that. baby steps first and this seems like a good step as any he'll be coming by. ] Anything in particular you need help in? Looks like you've been pretty busy even before the message.

Mm! I think there are a lot of people with different skills and specialties too, even in the lab.

[Admittedly, this is not exactly his. The nature of his research and experiments was never quite like this.]

Any help would be appreciated. I'm mostly trying to get an idea of the sort of plant life and animal life we've been finding, and what's dangerous. And what's useful.

Oh- I can definitely help in that. The plants I mean. [ give him a second to find the particular section, papers rustling as he approaches closer to see where he could drop his things off. last thing he wants to do is break something here. ]

I've been researching and experimenting on the samples of the plant life we have at the ready and we've gathered during resource hunting. [ though, admittedly, it was for rather selfish purposes.

finding a substitute for nicotine may not be the most magnanimous action to do for the group here but it allowed him to discover a few things alone the way. ] Think I got a list of what's edible and what's non-edible and what can make you trip. Is that any use to ya?
