SETTLING IN (OPEN MINGLE)
It's been an exciting time for everyone, hasn't it? Newer or older, Iniidae's expanded motley crew has variously made a whole lot of new friends and acquaintances all of a sudden, seen the sad remnants of the first crew, been chased around by monsters, brought back what loot they could gather, and perhaps cried over the deathsong of an alien squidwhale. IT'S BEEN A TRIP.
Everyone's made it to the base in (hopefully) one piece, though. So what comes next?
Everyone's made it to the base in (hopefully) one piece, though. So what comes next?
PROMPTS
I. changers and strangers
[The base's population sure has just about doubled! URSULA's gotten busy giving the newcomers their survival packs and wrist-worn databases, as well as their nanite shots, to give them the same telepathy and, ah, death safety nets as the older crew.
Whether you're getting used to the new company and the sudden crowding, or just getting used to everything, period . . . how are you settling in with each other in general? Are you just running around exploring and bumping into people? Checking up on the folks you got to know? Planning the next trip out to the Aurora and how to deal with the Reapers? Are you just trying to find somewhere private to have a nap, when privacy is suddenly at even more of a premium? Or using your new mindspeak abilities to turn your thoughts into a broadcast radio show for everyone around you?]
II. so much -- er, little -- room for activities
[Not only are there more people, there's more stuff! What did you bring back from the Aurora, and what do you plan to do with it? There are already filled experiment tanks, some kind of construction area for the vehicles and other similarly large projects set up, an impromptu food testing area in the kitchen, and some starts at farming and cultivation of the more useful flora/fauna, if you want to add on to existing projects or ask people about them!
There's also a wealth of new possibilities: free rooms to be furnished and made more livable, labs to be stocked with fresh equipment, said equipment to set up and experiment with . . . apple tree seeds to grow for delicious apple juice . . .? Follow your hearts.]
III. back in the deep blue sea
[Of course, with the base filled up, the wide, wide ocean might be more appealing to some people. Maybe you've gone out on a tutorial run with someone who can tell you about the vagaries of the various critters around here. Maybe you just want to explore at your own pace, or resume a planned gathering mission. Maybe you're heading back towards the Aurora biome to take on a Reaper head-on again already (oh dear). Maybe you've just hauled your butt up to the surface of the sea around the base, where you can take a rest on a sandbar, relish the space and sea and sky, and breathe in this strange planet's air.
. . . or you might just be standing in the locker room trying to work up the nerve to actually suit up and head out there again. I hear shipwrecks and horrifying sea monsters are not the most calming intro to the underwater lifestyle.]
IV. wildcard
[Anything else your character would think of to do in their first few days on base? Go for it! Don't forget to check out the OOC plotting and mission signups as well!]

Mind if I watch?

[gesturing over at the few finished plates]
You can help yourself too, if you like. I'm not sure what people like yet, so it's a bit of a-- tasting board.

Well, nothing to do but dive in. He's always had a strong stomach, so he'll probably be fine. He picks a greenish dish at random and nibbles at its contents, pondering the taste as he goes back to watching Mikleo. He has to stand on his tiptoes to watch effectively. ]
This is surprisingly good. Normally, you wouldn't expect ocean plants to have much flavor.
no subject
That's true. There are a lot more edibles underwater than you'd think...the variety's surprising, an the farther out we roam, the more we find. I keep expecting more things to be poisonous, but aside from a few types of the fish, it's mostly been all right.

[ He doesn't envy the first taste tasters. But then again, he'll probably have to be one of those people sooner or later. ]

[ He tries a bit of sashimi next, head tilting as he tries to analyze the flavor. It's very... fresh? ]
Well, as long as no one's died yet, it's probably okay.
[ And he looks up at Mikleo for his reaction. No one's died yet? Right?? ]
no subject
We've had a few queasy stomachs, but no, no one's actually fallen over from the cuisine. Also I think some of it was general seasickness, not the food.
[A thought strikes him, and he laughs.]
Fukami told me it's normal for a lot of things to actually be okay to eat in an ocean. I hadn't thought about that in a while, but I guess he's right!
no subject
[ And if he gets sick, then he can blame Fukami. Yes. Sounds like a plan. ]
How would Fukami feel about people eating octopus, you think? It's pretty tasty, right?
no subject
I--wouldn't suggest it to him, I think? That might be kind of rude?
[Actually he's not 100% sure if it is, but it's one of those questions that's kind of hard to ask someone out of the blue.]
no subject
[ It's an undeniable fact that lots of people eat octopus, though. Guess they should just sweep it under the rug? Luckily, there are no other octopuses in this ocean to potentially offend Fukami over.
He tries a bit of the shaved ice and bobs his head in approval. Sweets have always been his weakness... ]
Did you do a lot of cooking before this? This seems like an advanced level of skill.
no subject
[He half-smiles to see Loki's approval; it's always nice to have a new dish turn out to someone's taste.]
And--yes, I do a lot of cooking at home, but this is pretty representative. If it's a cold dish, I can make it. If it needs fire, someone else needs to handle the heating to make it turn out really well. Sorey likes ice cream and other desserts, so I got the most practice on those.
no subject
Speaking of hot dishes, I made something the other day that turned out surprisingly well. I can share it with you, if you'd like.
[ He's actually quite proud of it...! ]
no subject
I'd love to hear about it, if your'e willing to share it.

[ He needs to fix a meal up for himself, anyway. The rest of Mikleo's masterpieces can go to their crewmates.
He begins rummaging through the pantry, pulling out ingredients and equipment with sudden vigor. Several key features may be noted throughout his cooking process:
1) Many of the ingredients seem older, on their way out the door. In fact, some are nearly unidentifiable. Was that weird lump in the pantry before? Shut up. Don't be picky. Food shouldn't be wasted.
2) The flavors of the ingredients don't seem like they'll match at all. Sweet, savory, and bitter, he takes a bit of everything. But he's utterly confident in what he's grabbing, so he must know what's doing?
3) He chops the ingredients up into irregular, almost sociopathic sizes. It isn't the form that matters, it's the art of the chef.
4) Once his pan is hot, he tosses everything in at once. Is that the smell of burning? It's okay, a slight burnt taste gives the flavor depth and texture.
5) Over time, a heavy aura begins to emanate from the frying pan. It might just be your imagination. It's not going away, though.
6) Loki dumps the concoction into a bowl. By then, the atmosphere around the dish is close to suffocating. The smell radiating from it is a satanic whirlwind to the senses. If one could describe evil in edible form, it might be the contents of this bowl. ]

[ It didn't turn out bad, if he can say so himself.
Do you brave this dish, Mikleo? ]

but it looks like evil
BUT REALLY HOW BAD CAN IT BE YOU LIVE WITH SOREY YOU'VE PUT HIS FAILURES IN YOUR MOUTH AND THEY'RE LITERALLY LABELED 'DARK MATTER' IN THE INVENTORY
but there's an aura of malevolence around that bowl???
BUT IT WOULD BE RUDE]

holds his breath and tries a spoonful.]

Yet when Loki takes a bite, he brightens. ]
I think the taste improved since last time. I guess practice really does make perfect!

M...MANFULLY SWALLOWS THE SPOONFUL...OH GOD]
I don't understand how this happened.
no subject
[ He glances over. He was already happily digging in. ]
How do you like it?
[ He doesn't just cook for anybody, you know! ]
no subject
[He's almost lost for words, but rallies at the last second.]
I've never tasted anything quite like it. Where did you learn to make this...?
no subject
Oh, it's something I put together myself. Some recipes just come from the heart, you know?
[ Even if it's the heart of darkness... ]
Ah, but food like yours is good too. It reminds me a little of home.
