action or telepathy / mission #2!
[ early in the evening, everyone will get a little tingling in their brains as Korosensei decides to test out this wide-range telepathy thing. The concept isn't new to him, but its actual existence outside of science fiction is; it's going to take a bit of getting used to, no doubt. But it could be very useful once mastered.
They've got work to do, besides! ]
Testing, testing... Hello, and good evening, everybody! This is Korosensei speaking. With any luck, all of you can hear me right now! Don't we have such exciting technology in this base? [ he speaks with the ease and clarity of someone very used to talking in front of an audience, although he still has that sort of annoying lilt to his voice. ] You may be aware that our hostess has a job for us to do - a dangerous one, too. Radiation poisoning is quite a serious thing! I'd like to gather anyone who's interested in solving the issue Observatory #3 to trade ideas, if you please. It's imperative that we all learn to work together here if we want to stay safe! That will be all. This Sensei hopes to see many of you there.
[ and, indeed, he'll be waiting exactly where he said he would. Those who have met him before doubtlessly found him hard to forget; those who haven't will find themselves facing a yellow-skinned, octopus-like creature, easily breaking nine feet tall and with a grinning face, wearing what looks like a graduation robe and cap. Of course. Korosensei is standing there patiently, tentacles linked politely in front of himself, and he greets anyone who actually comes. ]
Wonderful! Sensei is relieved people are truly interested in not being irradiated. It's an unpleasant experience. Really. [ as if he has experience?! ] According to URSULA, there's a radiation leak coming from that downed ship, the Aurora. Well, there are multiple ways of solving the problem, and I'm open to hearing each and every one of them! However, my recommendation would be to seal the breach at the source somehow. The most effective type of shielding is generally heavier metals. Therefore, Sensei's suggestion is to cannibalize another part of the Aurora to use as shielding. The tricky part would be obtaining it... Well, I'm immune to radiation, but, um... If it can be avoided, I'd like to avoid swimming as much as possible...
[ then why are you here, sensei... ]
A-anyway, a penny for your thoughts!

[Everyone in the observatory can hear him, but he's hiding inside Sorey so as not to take up extra space, so they can't see him. He can see other people's actions just fine, though.]
no subject
He can't be sure, seeing as he thinks this is a government-funded "field trip." ]
Radiation is a little bit difficult to explain. In layman's terms, it's energy that been emitted from some source. It's not always harmful, but in this case, it is. This radiation is ionizing, meaning the particles are energized enough to remove electrons from atoms they encounter along the way, making said atoms into dangerous ions. Essentially, exposure to it can change the makeup of the core building blocks of your body over time.
no subject
Half of the terminology is going over his head, honestly, but the explanation's simple enough that he's getting some kind of gist. If he thinks of radiation energy as similar to magical energy, then all right, he accepts that they can't just conventionally push it back.]
Thank you. I...have no idea what electrons and atoms are exactly, but how much time are we talking, before those changes begin to occur? I'm guessing keeping whatever shield is created between ourselves and the breach would slow that sort of damage down further, as well?

then he forgets to watch his steps and ends up getting into his waiting area. Of course, Lancer has not even meet this guy yet so he just passes around until this yellow, absolutely weird "creature" approaches him with that kind of greeting. He is shocked for a while and ends up staring at him.]
Wh-what are ya?!
action
He crosses his arms - tentacles? - arm-like tentacles over his chest at that shocked non-response, seeming vaguely irritated. ]
Hey! Is that any way to greet a stranger?! I'm trying to build a friendly atmosphere in this base, you know!
no subject
This guy seems irritated and that makes Lancer takes a few steps back. He needs some time to recover from what he just see after all.]
C-calm down, man. Y'know I didn't expect to encounter someone like you in this place.

She's never died by radiation poisoning probably.Except when she gets there.
She comes face to face with a 9 foot tall yellow octopus-like creature and she's Full Of Regret.... Maybe she's really not cut out for this sort of thing after all????
She's staring, and she doesn't realize that he's looking at her until he asks his question, and it's so teacherly that she snaps to attention immediately after years and years of schooling.]
U-um, I...! I don't know anything about radiation, but... um... there are a lot of different sorts of people here, so maybe...if we all work together...?
[Well done, A++ suggestions by Mai.]
action;
There's no way he's sending this sweet young lady into a radioactive shipwreck. But it's the thought that counts. Korosensei responds in a warm, reassuring tone. ]
You're absolutely right, young lady. In fact, that's precisely why I reached out to the entire base. If we all put our heads together, we should be able to solve this problem easily. [ if it wasn't for all this water, he could probably solve it by himself..... but there sure is a lot of water. ] Even if you don't know much about radiation, there are things you can do to help. We'll need to collect more materials than just scrap metal.
no subject
So, tentatively, she smiles a little.]
Oh...right. [That's!! Something she can do!!!
Probably.]
Um, what else do we need? I'll be happy to help however I can!

Y-You're one of those animals being hurt by it! No wonder you care about it so much!
action;
How rude!! I was born and raised on dry land, for your information!! And while it may be technically correct, I would prefer not to be called an animal...! I'm a person. A living, wriggling person!
[ he reaches forward to poke her forehead with one of his sucker-like fingers; he's surprisingly fast, although his sound-barrier-breaking speed is mysteriously absent. ]
Moreover, if we don't do anything about it, you'll be "one of those animals being hurt by it" soon enough, yourself. This is an environmental problem that affects us all.
no subject
Uh, right! I don't want anything weird to happen to anyone around here, either. So... [Right she has to think on this. It's all technology stuff that she doesn't get but there must be a way she can help.]
Metals have to be welded on, right? I could focus my fire artes to melt the metal and attach them to these breaches. Since they're artes, they can still work sorta underwater too.

Wow, you're...really big.
[He clears his throat. Freak out about the gigantic talking octopus later, Sorey, there's work to be done.]
--Uh, I don't have a lot of experience with radiation, but if there's a certain type of material that can be used as a shield then I don't mind collecting it. Heavier metals, right? I saw a lot of metal on the ocean floor when I was swimming, so we might not need to take any additional pieces off of the ship itself. It sounds like the biggest problem will be avoiding the radiation itself, for most of us.
no subject
[ yeah, he heard that comment, and he responds by "flexing" his arms... although they curl into a perfect curve rather than bend at any elbow, but. it's obvious what he's miming. He holds the pose as he continues speaking, not missing a beat. ]
That would be an excellent contribution, young man. Those pieces you saw on the floor are most likely parts that fell off of the Aurora. [ a beat. ] Unfortunately, Sensei has no way of telling how irradiated those parts might be. Please use caution while collecting them.
no subject
Right, just like that.
[But he's concerned as soon as he hears the rest, the smile slipping slightly.]
You think those metal bits might have radiation on them too? If there was a way to tell it would make collecting them a lot easier. How do people usually detect radiation?

I presume irradiated materials are the largest concern. Scavenging itself hardly poses an insurmountable problem. [ with a hairflip, because of course there's a hairflip. ]
Perhaps the laboratory scanners can be adapted to include radiation levels?
no subject
That's a fine idea. I'll have to ask URSULA if such an upgrade is possible. It would be rude to go tinkering in her systems without permission, after all.

If it's swimming you have a problem with, I could transport you without a heavy need for it.

Ah!! Could you?! That would be excellent! Um, how would you be doing that, exactly?
[ nice job agreeing to it before you know what he's doing. ]
no subject
He's easy enough to find again once she goes looking.]
I confess I am still quite unfamiliar with radiation. If we were to to, ah, seal the breach somehow... [She doesn't imagine this breach is anything like the Fade breaches in Thedas, oh no.] Would it be possible to stop the source itself sometime in the future? Or would the shielding hold as long as we need it to?
[She is. Trying very hard to learn here!!]
no subject
I'm afraid that stopping the source would be impossible. The kind of radioactive material that would be used for powering a large ship will probably take many lifetimes to decay completely. The best that we can do is seal it away. [ he raises a "finger." ] You can think of it as a sort of poisonous gas that comes from certain types of metals. It's invisible, and it can't be destroyed, but we can try to contain it.

Ursula stated where the source was located when I asked. What kind of tools do we have at our disposal? I can generate fire, if we need to try and bond metal to metal, but that kind of heat is going to be uncomfortable. I can also assist in lifting pieces into place for sealing, but I'll admit...
[ she makes a hand tossing motion. ]
... no swimming sounds like a tall order for this place.
[ then again are any of these action threads happening at once, because she'll second Sensei pairing up with Brett to avoid part of that problem #yolo ]

[ is that too much to ask? Actually, yes, probably, when they're currently underwater on an ocean planet. Poor Korosensei just can't get used to this. Clearing his throat, he continues. ]
