[Early in the morning, maybe too early for some people, there's a very important mass text being sent out:]

HEY EVERYONE IT'S SOREY

AND MIKLEO

WE WOULD LIKE TO ASK IF YOU CAN SHARE SOME MEMORIES OF YOUR HOME, SO THAT WE CAN SHARE THEM WITH URSULA

IT WOULD MAKE HER HAPPY

SHE CAN READ ALL OF THIS THOUGH SO COME TO THE LABS WHEN YOU'RE FREE SO IT'S A SURPRISE FOR HER

NO PEAKING URSULA

[Sure enough, if you venture over to the labs anytime today, you'll find Sorey and/or Mikleo waiting around for people and multitasking at running a few tests.]

[So, Don's a little paranoid about brain-picking devices. He's had one used on him before, and it was no fun. Still, from his conversations with Mikleo, he doesn't think the seraph wishes anyone harm, so he doubts this invitation is particularly dangerous.

Nonetheless, he seems a little perturbed when he arrives at the lab, and immediately asks this question to whoever of the two happens to come over first.]

How exactly is this gonna work? Is it some kind of brain-imaging scan?

I don't think it scans your brain, but...

[He tries to figure out how to describe it; the technology is a little lost on him, but he understood the basic grasp.]

It's sort of like taking a recording of the memory you're thinking of, if that makes sense.

That seems like it's some pretty sophisticated technology. [Don can tell that Sorey doesn't know too much about it, so he doesn't want to be overwhelming, but his curiosity is just insatiable.] Recordings of memories? Humans were just barely getting around to looking through brains where I was from, and even the Triceratons couldn't do more than pick through them...

Can I take a look at what you're using to record them?

[Sorey taps his head.]

We've already got everything we need right here. The nanites that we use to communicate telepathically can be altered just enough so that you can choose to share images from your memories and they'll save to a space that we can access them. Or, Dirk can assess them at least.

[To be fair, Sorey could go through them too if he asked, but Dirk has a handle of spear-heading Operation: Give URSULA A Body And Virtual Playground.]

It only works of you consciously choose to share those memories, and the more information you have on them helps. Images are good, but sounds and smells help to make it more realistic.

Wait. Wait...

You're saying that the nanites have a whole recording of my brain, and all my memories?

[A pause, as he considers this:]

That is so cool! I mean, that makes sense, if the nanites are supposed to reconstruct our entire bodies - that'd have to include the synapse connections in our brains - but just... that's incredible! I hadn't even considered this possibility. [Aaaaand now all the possible invasive things occur to him. Whelp. But URSULA hasn't broadcast their thoughts all over the base yet! He can probably trust her not to do this still!]

I don't think they record things unless you actively will them to. It's conscious instead of subconscious--or that's how I understood it.

[Though he wouldn't actually mind having a recording of his memories if it was needed, it seems like a waste of space to store all of that when it fits perfectly fine in the brain he has.]

So basically, I just have to think really hard, and URSULA will be able to have access to my memories?

[Seems... deceptively simple, honestly.]

Yeah. The actual science involved sounds complicated--Dirk had to figure out how to tweak the nanites so that they could receive that kind of signal, but once that got sorted out it was pretty easy.

[He trusts Dirk's understanding of the system to not go into too many details; he just knows it works if they try.]

[This is probably something that Don will have to talk to Dirk about, if only because he'd love to know if there's other information he can extract from the nanites. Non-invasively, of course.]

Should I, uh... be meditating or something? To focus. Since there doesn't seem to exactly be much protocol on how to actually do this thing.

[If all he has to do is think... well, that sounds boring for Sorey.]

That's not a bad idea! The images can come out a little fuzzy if you're not concentrating, so if meditation works best for you then I'd recommend it.

What are you going to do? Are you just monitoring whoever comes in here?

[He's curious what there even is for anyone else to do.]

Or is there a survey or something you're taking? I mean, you're probably going to get a few people who are just here out of curiosity. [Including himself.]

[There's really nothing for him to do besides explain their request, he's just trying to help like a good person.]

There's something I can use to play back the memory to see if it's complete, so usually I just check that once people are done. And I try to answer whatever questions I can, since it seems like a lot of people aren't sure why it's so simple.

So you'd be able to watch my memories?

[Don sounds slightly... uncomfortable about that, though he's trying not to let it show. Shouldn't he be more okay with this by now? (Maybe not. His sensei would certainly be reminding him to keep his guard up.)]

I would be able to, but I won't unless you're okay with it. You can check it instead of me, if that's easier. I want to do what everyone's most comfortable with.

[He picks up the pad from his table and offers it over; it's just a normal little touch pad, and right now there's nothing but static on the screen.]

[It's weird how something so innocuous could be the window into Don's mind and soul. The Turtle picks it up with a cautiously light grip, like it might hurt him, but it doesn't; it's just a touchpad.

He turns it over as he analyzes the machine. It really doesn't look at all threatening, or even like a device that could read minds; all it's probably doing is picking up the signal the nanites output, and converting it into a readable format. It's not invasive. It's probably not even that unusual, for the technology in this world.

This is nothing like the machine that dug into his scalp and ripped through his brain. He tries to remind himself of that.]

It's... not you, don't worry. I'm just a private kind of guy. [He offers a smile.] But, let's get started. Do you mind taking this back?
