Floater Island

≡U.R.S.U.L.A. NAVIGATION

Island of Dreams
The day before the outing, URSULA will address the crew with her plan.

"Recently, I've been tracking the progress of an island, called Floater Island, coming within swimming range. It is currently south of the Aurora. As part of my focus on recovering what I can from previous crews, I plan to visit the old base there. I would like it very much if anyone who wishes to enjoy the island and help me come along. I would advise bringing your bedding and some tools to make staying on the island a little easier.

Anyone staying on base will not have to worry, as I won't be out of range for base management. But I think a trip together as a crew would be relaxing and perhaps ease any negative feelings lingering from my previous mission.

I will return to all functions in two days. Approximately."

She will encourage anyone with questions to come with her, as she promises the island will have many resources, as well as just being fun. She will also ask for help in recovering whatever she can from the previous crew.

The trip to the island will take place in the early morning, with one of URSULA's small drones leading the way to a pleasant beach. Don't worry, no Reapers will party crash.

Instead, the crew gets to enjoy Floater Island in all its glory.

What about the objectives? Well, URSULA wasn't kidding about wanting to do something nice for everyone. Seeing everyone explore and enjoy themselves will be enough.

But for those looking for more, the island is full of resources, especially of the food variety, but also something about look at is the base! URSULA will appreciate any investigations into what might have happened to the crew there and she always encourages efforts to bring extra supplies back to base for the crew. If asked further, she might also suggest that 'fellows' seem to enjoy climbing trees and mountains, and potentially stargazing with those they have a romantic interest in. She has heard this is very popular with romantic couples!

So enjoy Floater Island. Dive in the caves. Eat fruit. Lick a frog! Try to adopt as many birdogs as possible. Recover records from the former crew and make your AI overlord feel emotions she isn't programmed for.

Have fun while the island is in range!

Questions about the island, the mission or discoveries can be asked under the OOC Questions comment!

[Telepathy, good. Don doesn't even have to look up from his work, though he at least puts most of his focus towards talking for the moment.]

I've seen deposits of metals on this island while I was scouting, and we can probably salvage from the abandoned bases. Not all of them will make a good magnet, but if we can get iron or copper, we'll be pretty well-off.

[ SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT MAGNETS, thank god. Loki doesn't recognize the voice, but he'll take any honest help. ]

Oh, so you know your stuff. Those deposits could be handy. Do you have any tools to extract the metal with?

[ He could probably find something if needed, though. ]

I picked up a set of multitools when I was salvaging the lifepods earlier with a woman named Feferi. [She's some kind of alien person, but that's not super important (for once).] That'll work for extracting the chunks - kind of a hack job, but it's probably good enough.

[A pause.] How's this idea going to work, though? Just making magnets and sticking them to the island won't do anything. What's the plan for keeping the island stable in storms?

I'll be honest. URSULA said it would work, so I'm going by her reassurances. She sent a drone to handle the more technical aspects of the plan.

[ He. He doesn't know about magnets. Not on this kind of technical scale. URSULA tried to explain the physics of it to him, but it eventually went over his head. ]

I understand your skepticism, though. URSULA's capabilities are often beyond my understanding.

[Don makes a mental note to ask URSULA himself about it at some point which his mun will probably need to thread, but that drone will definitely be a good starting point.]

Where are you on the island? Maybe I could head over there and check out the drone's plans myself, figure out what we'd need to do.

I'm on shore near the Aurora. You can come if you like.

[ He'd been ready to fly over to the ship, but he can wait a bit longer. Until then, he'll just be a small wetsuited child sitting on a rock by the beach, staring out at the sea. ]

Give me five minutes and I'll be there.

[True to his word, about five minutes later, a Turtle will drop heavily onto the beach from a beachside tree, duffel bag in hand. He pauses as he looks up, clearly not expecting what looks like a child.]

... Hi, are you the person asking about magnets?

[ Make it surprise for two, because Loki was not expecting Donatello, and he startles from his peaceful perch. Turtles don't belong in trees?? But neither are they supposed to be bipedal or quite this gigantic, so maybe he'll just stop worrying about the details now. That sounds like a good plan. ]

Ah. Yeah. The name's Loki.

[ He glances at the drone accompanying him, which floats on over to Don. It can show him some extremely detailed plans and theory. Maybe he'll understand it better than Loki did. ]

And you are?

I'm Donatello. [Said as he's looking at the drone, already poking at it for the plans.]

... Huh. [magnets, how do they work Don can kind of follow the procedure...] So, basically, we're magnetizing a bunch of pieces of metal, sticking them in the island, and then generating an opposite-charge field to hold it in place.

Seems workable. URSULA's going to handle the heavy lifting with generating the field?

[He seems like he knows what he has to do for this. even though it's kind of pseudoscientific, this is exactly the crap he pulls in his own canon]

That leaves us to gather the supplies. What about the initial electromagnet we'll need to magnetize the metals with?

I was hoping to find something on the Aurora. I can't imagine that such an extensive ship would lack for materials. We should be able to salvage a strong magnet from a motor, or even some of the medical equipment.

[ Actually identifying the parts might take Loki a while though... His knowledge is broad but relatively shallow. He looks at Donatello curiously. ]

Are you good with machinery? You might be able to do a better job of it.
bonomial: (don't worry I got this)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-06-27 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to think I am. [Spoken like a Turtle who can't bring himself to brag about his skills.] I've even made a giant electromagnet once! Though... uh, it was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing.

[He glances up from the drone to look at Loki, meeting his childish face.] Anyway, it shouldn't be too hard if we can find a magnet. Heating our metal pieces might be the toughest part.

[ He meets Donatello's glance with attention and a small bit of curiosity, but without the wide-eyed look someone might expect of his apparent age. Non-humans, while individually interesting, are an old presence in Loki's life in all their shapes and forms. ]

Right. Let's see what we have to work with, shall we?

[ Though he's visited the Aurora quite a bit already, he never paid attention to the machinery. There's bound to be something there, though. ]

I'm curious to hear about how you improvised your electromagnet, though. Can the process be recreated?

bonomial: (let me explain)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-07-04 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Explaining this is gonna be weird.]

At the time, I was trying to make an electromagnetic pulse to shut down a bunch of nanobots simultaneously. My friend and I used my laptop to override the functions of a roller coaster's power system. We magnetized the tracks by redirecting the current through the roller coaster, then alternated the polarity to generate a multipolar flux - that's what caused the electromagnetic pulse.

[A beat, mostly because he needed to take a breath after that.]

I kinda made it up as I went. It worked, though! [Surprisingly.] Just about fried my laptop. [And... well, killed the robotic equivalent of a child. Don's still a bit sad about that, though better Nano than his family.]

The only problem is, we don't have anything like that here.
