JELLY SHROOM CAVE BASE EXPLORATION | ACTION

[In the early morning, just after breakfast is cleaned up, Sorey sends a telepathic broadcast to whoever is still currently hanging around the base:

Hey everyone! We found a strange cave way down deep in the tunnels a couple of weeks ago, and the fish down there told us there were humans living down there somehow! We’re going to check it out today. You’re welcome to come with, but bring some kind of shielding, all right? There’s a whole bunch of Tiger Plants on the route, and those spikes they shoot are no joke!

Mikleo chimes in: If you have swimming troubles, I should be able to take you around, though a couple of you might want to bring Seaglides as well. We mapped out a partial safe route, but keep in mind there’s some very large predators, and the water pressure’s going to be pretty intense if you move too far from us down there. Come prepared for that.

Should you as an intrepid explorer decide to venture down into the tunnels with them, there’s plenty to see. Glowing Jelly Shrooms are scattered across the caves, the only bit of light offered so far down in the dark. Sorey and Mikleo will lead the group in a careful circuit through them, not going too close. It’s easy to see why when a couple of Crabsnakes poke their heads out curiously.

The abandoned base the group will come across is small but has some useful items if you care to take a look. There’s also a dully glowing three-person Seamoth to be discovered not too far away, out of power, if any technologically-inclined people want to figure out how to get that back to base for use.

[He's frustrated enough to take his golden guns from his deck.]

Strider you have two seconds to reconsider that.

[By which he means no seconds because he's not less of a cheater.]

[The bullets get sliced in half and water pools in bubbles behind them.]

[As classy as Dirk flashstepping into Jake's space and slamming his knee up towards his side.]

As always.

[Jake twists so their knees connect instead and he uses it to fire twice— once ahead, once where he suspects Dirk will actually go.]

[splinten]

[Yeah, you know where Dirk's going to actually go?

He's going to headbutt Jake English in his bucktoothed face is where.]

[potentite]

[That shocks him but it means he automatically brings the butt of his gun into Dirk's head while using him to shove off.]

[splinten]

[The sword vanishes as Dirk catches the hand and twists it. Momentum puts Dirk behind Jake with the gun pointing into Jake's spine.]

Dude. I know I have the home turf advantage, but you are not giving me your best here.

[potentite]

[Jake doesn't growl, because he's not Dirk, but he snaps at him.]

I could still fire and hit you, so stop being so damn smug!

[splinten]

You'd have a bullet through your spine first, and you know I'd dodge any shot at that angle.

[He lets go of Jake, but he's holding his hands up in the air. Put a pause on the fight.]

Why are you fighting defensively?

[potentite]

[Jake looks insulted even if he knows it's true. But still!]

I don't know how to fight underwater. I'm still testing how it works. The worst I've done is some in the shallows.

[splinten]

Do you want to practice with me?

[Dirk has fought underwater since he was old enough to wrestle seamonsters for dinner. Jake's monster fights were all on land. It makes sense that Jake would need time to get used to it.]

[potentite]

[He hesitates. Not that he didn't mind that Dirk helped him learn to fight better but it wasn't actually Dirk. It's embarrassing to need more help here with Dirk in front of him.]

Our styles are completely different...

[splinten]

[It disappoints him a little, but he understands. After the way Dirk tried to 'teach' him in combat—well. Dirk wouldn't want lessons from himself either.]

Okay. You can probably find someone on-base to Strife with you underwater if you want.

[potentite]

[He groans before reaching out and grabbing his arm.]

Come on, Strider. No one's going to be as top notch under the waves as you. I'm just... a little prideful. But I'll put it aside for you. Anyhoo, who would know me as well?

[splinten]

[There is a hand on his arm? Dirk is not sure why this happened.]

I don't understand.

[What is Jake talking about? He knows they have communication issues and this is probably a good moment to work on them, instead of Dirk extrapolating off into infinity with what Jake said.

He is already doing that, but at least he has learned to ask for clarification instead of letting his own worst assumptions dictate the course of things.]

[potentite]

[Jake shrugs a little, though it's out of his annoyance at himself.]

I mean I'm embarrassed I need so much help. I dislike the thought that I can't handle myself. But I have to accept I need it.

[splinten]

[Oh. That makes a lot of sense. Dirk doesn't visibly relax, but all those neurons running wild with worst case interpretations begin to settle. (Now only half of them are doing that.)]

What about a trade? Your jungle kid expertise for my ocean boy familiarity.

[potentite]

[He knows that's just to relax him but even so he does feel a little better if it's a trade.]

A niche skill here but why not? You can learn to be a monkey and teach me how to be a mermaid.

[splinten]

Those skills are important. We played cops and robbers up there, English.

Flashstepping can't do much when there's debris everywhere.

[He needs to learn jungle skills so he can win at tag and cops and robbers? Yes this is very important to him. Jake must know.]

[potentite]

Well, if you insist, I can spare a some five-finger help for you. But only as payment for your assistance.

[Besides it'll be fun to get to teach Dirk something.]

[splinten]

[Dirk does not say anything about five fingered help.]

[He holds out his fist for a bump.]

[Jake does not leave him hanging.]
