One fine morning, a boyish voice broadcasts to everyone around base:

There's a lot left to explore inside the Monolith, so I'll be visiting it today. If anyone else wants to come along, feel free.

Once all interested parties are assembled and traveling arrangements sorted out, they're off to the Monolith! Given the length of the journey, this will be a real time investment. A one-way trip takes nearly two hours by flight. Traveling in silence? Boring. How should they occupy their time? Travel games? Joy rides in the Seamoth? Maybe even some old-fashioned chit chat??

Once they arrive, there's plenty to explore. With some sniffing around, they'll find a map revealing that the Monolith contains a cafe and common area, crew quarters, lab, med bay, and "special alien containment" room. However, it'll take some ingenuity to actually reach each area. And by ingenuity I mean bombs.

Which is why the group will need a demolition crew! Get to blasting those walls in logical places. Or illogical places. No one ever said it had to be a good demolition crew. With enough willful destruction, surely all of the the Monolith's secrets will be laid bare in no time.

[Sorry Hinata he has to huff at his friend more. This is not a trial it's just two idiots. Which is like a trial, really.]

It's a saying! It's not like I was actually thinking of breasts! I swear which of us has green eyes again? Don't worry so much jesus pancake flipping christ.

[Woah. Not cool? Dirk's chill demeanour doesn't actually change, except that the second Jake makes a comment about green eyes, Dirk's eyes narrow behind hi shades. His always low voice drops by half a note.]

You need to refine your mental construction of me if you're interpreting this like that.

[He stops. Makes himself reign it in. Jake isn't coming from nowhere with this. It has a good basis. So chill out, Strider.]

I understand why you might think that. But I was just teasing you, Jake.

[Hinata doesn't deserve to witness this.]

[Wait stop with the mood shifts, Hajime can't keep up. His laughter fades awkwardly, and he's immediately realizing that he's missing something. Not that he has a hope of knowing exactly what's happened in the past, but... he's not stupid or unobservant.

But that's a question to ask gun friend another time. Since Jake is probably the one to be more forthcoming with that kind of information, he thinks...?

Either way, it's a little awkward for him, so he just takes a sip from his coffee and pushes it toward Jake.]

Anyway... don't we have the Monolith to investigate...? I'll make sure to bring some of this stuff back, so don't worry.

[he says, as if he's not going to be hitching a ride on one of them anyway, so really it's them who's going to be bringing it back.]

[Oh he feels bad now. He didn't mean to but, well, he's been in enough arguments about Dirk being jealous or insecure that it kind of just popped up naturally. It was thoughtless of him and he's grateful in some ways for Hinata's distraction, even if it makes him feel equally bad but even he knows everything makes him feel bad.]

Oh! Righto, we really should scope it out more. It would be a shame to miss out on anything.

[If he didn't learn from Jane that regifting is a bad idea, he'd try to apologise with Hinata's coffee. Instead he just holds it to his chest.]

I'll probably stay looking around here? [That way Hinata and Dirk can choose to avoid him if they want since he went and screwed up.]

[Dirk's face doesn't move, but behind his shades his eyes flicker from Hinata—awkward, unfortunate, no idea what's happening here—and Jake—probably thinking it' all his fault. He considers their discussion, and he makes his choice.]

Dudes. Splitting up isn't productive for either survival or not being alone. Are you two trying to be the anti-hope brigade?

[FRIEND STICK TOGETHER NO MATTER HOW AWKWARD THINGS GET.

He can't believe he has to be the one to talk like this. At least he can say it in his normal voice and avoid saying anything painfully cliche. He can't survive being a shonen protag.]

Yeah, there's no reason to split up.

[He nods firmly. It's just that there's less chance to sit around navel-gazing if they're moving and exploring rather than enjoying their coffee shop au.]

I just meant we can come back for the rest of this stuff. But we should keep moving for now.

[Also-- it's nice to be included in the actual exploration, too, since he kind of just showed up to prevent them from drinking syrup right out of the bottles.]
