subnautica | action ; open base mingle

It’s been about a month or so since people started arriving to this world and onto the base—a month of shenanigans, exploration, danger, angry sealife and other things. In this still-small base, there’s all kinds of things that characters can do so, therefore, consider this an all-purpose base mingle post.

[In the wake of the Aurora explosion, there were quite a few things that needed repairing. Even then, the base itself is by no means complete, with limited room and not even rooms for each and every person. Luckily, there aren’t all that many living in the base! Yet.

But, there’s always something to do. Are you helping with repairs? Trying to decorate the base somehow? Building something new that can add to it? Perhaps you’re one of those in the laboratory, researching what species that this ocean has to offer. Hopefully nothing else is blowing up.

Or are you just standing around, staring wistfully out at the ocean and not contributing at all? I mean, that’s fine, but…]

→ ii. catch of the day
[How’s that seafood? What? You have no idea how to cook it? Well, then.

It’s probably like sushi, where you can eat it raw, right? Or maybe you’re one of those bringing back fresh supplies to the base. Possibly still wriggling around fresh supplies. Can you actually (miracle of miracles) cook some of the fish/other things that are probably fish so that they don’t taste half-bad?

If all else fails, just munch on some seaweed. I hear it’s nutritious.]

[Surely there’s nothing awkward about cramming yourself into one of the ‘free’ rooms around the base with your air mattress and curling up there. Have you set out a space for yourself? Found a nice spot where you’re usually alone but uh-oh don't count on that for too long?

Perhaps you’d rather just sleep in the hallway to avoid drifting off near others.

Maybe you just don’t sleep at all or you prefer roaming the base when it gets dark. Nightmares about sea creatures can be a doozy.]

[ Tired and pale aren't all that unusual for people who've been working hard (or overworking, or just about anything, she supposes), but it's still enough that in one of her drop off runs through the laboratories, she hears Mikleo and heads toward him instead of waving and heading off again. Keeping busy also meant getting out as often as possible, for her own sake. ]

I take it Rose is invested in studying things of this nature back where you're from?

[ Maybe. Seems like a somewhat reasonable stab in the dark. ]

How're you holding up?

[He snorts a little.]

Rose is a lot better with approaching biology than I am, sometimes. We took a lot of notes on everything, but I'm used to studying relics, not animals.

[It's not the full truth, but Rose is...complicated to explain, anyway, and he won't do it when she's not even around.]

I'm okay. The radiation effect's just lasting longer than I'd hoped.

[ A moment's consideration, then a careful pat of his shoulder. There there. It sucks being in recovery. (She's a hideous patient herself.) ]

Looks like we're all managing to adapt what skillsets we do have to be functional for what we don't have here. Or who, in this case.

[ She offers a small half-smile, letting some of her concern show in her eyes. ]

What's it still causing for you?

[He's gotten more used to other people making contact by now; he smiles back up at her, a little.]

Mostly I'm just...still dizzy a lot, and eating is kind of iffy. It helps to stay in bed and just pass on meals, but it's really a waste to do that all day when there's so much work to be done, so -- here I am.

[ She breathes out in a sharp snort, but people only learn their limits through their own attempts at pushing beyond them. Besides, she'd be just as bad. Being laid up healing isn't something she's well suited for due to her own desire for going. ]

Try sticking to liquids until you feel like eating again. It might help. You'll be back to feeling better than all that soon enough at this rate.

I've been drinking water. I don't--really need to eat even under normal circumstances, thankfully...

[he still feels embarrassed admitting how different he is to a regular human out loud, just a little. he realizes after a moment that it sounds ungracious, though]

Mm. A friend of mine from home didn't either, when I first met him. Though I don't think he even required water.

[ She's pretty sure he'd been sustained solely by his connection to the Fade. ]

Mm. Seraphim don't catch a lot of human illnesses either, normally. I keep wondering if radiation is something like malevolence after all.

Hm... based on what you've said before, it may. Or it may be something so new to either of us that it's in a category of its own.

[ She's too used to having her whole life called into question when it comes to beliefs these past few years. ]

I'd believe it. Enough things here certainly are.

...it'll be a good thing if that's the only time we'll have to deal with a lot of it, though. We weren't there for very long -- it works fast.

I'll have to keep that in mind.

[ And continue investigating a means around it. Or through it. Or figure out a spell, even with the way her connection to the Fade is thinner here. ]

May you face a full recovery soon. In the meantime, is there anything in all... [ vague hand motion toward what he's doing ] ... of that which I can assist with?

[He'll think a moment, then brighten.]

Ah! Yes, actually. You mentioned the other day you could use fire magic?

Hm? Yes, I can. Not as impressively as some I know, but well enough.

[ Which earns him a curious, speculative glance. ]

What did you have in mind?

[He gestures at the coral tank with his pen.]

These creatures grow metal, or something that seems very like it. We brought back some samples of that too; we were hoping someone could help us test how well they can be worked and shaped with fire, or if they can be at all. If we keep building things -- salvage from the Aurora won't last forever, right?

Mm, no. Base metals and ores were what I'd been investigating — there's a few promising places, but yes, I remember, with the corals...

[ She moves toward the coral tank, resting the her fist against her chin while she considers them. ]

Are the nodules the only metal, or has further research shown all of the individual coral contains the same metal as the outgrowths?

I'm not sure. Whatever the coral itself is made of, it's tough on the outside -- which might have its own uses. But it also means we haven't been able to crack a specimen apart to see for ourselves.

Hm.

[ She wishes she had any of the books from Skyhold with her now, or access to any halfway decent library with magical reference texts. Going at this from what she knows will take longer, but what else to do but apply herself to conquering new skills? It's what she has time for now.

After all, working on as many aspects of herself as she can to keep busy and productive helps in the long run. ]

I'll see what I can make of it. Figuring out how to interact and generate the kind of heat that might be required... it'll take some experimentation. I might want to save that for up on one of the sandbars, if I can rig some kind of table to keep supplies out of the water up there.

[ No explosions in enclosed spaces allowed. Personal mandate! ]

There's still some metal panels and things, and we have buoyant objects like the mattresses...the droids have also been good at analysis, if you think taking one or two up with you would help? Handy little things if you need something carried or to pass you things, too, and I bet they could get in the water pretty fast if things become too hot.

...and, thank you for your help. I was afraid we might never get to the bottom of this particular metallic mystery.
