Arrival: For Korra

[Kon wakes up the second his body hits the water and it takes him entirely too long to process the fact that yes, he is now somehow submerged in a body of water, and no, he had not been flying over a body of water at all. This is what he gets for flying into swirly vortexes in the sky instead of calling for back up. It is not the first time he's woken up without a clue as to how he got somewhere and it won't be the last, but that doesn't make it any less disconcerting. Even more disconcerting however is that he is just realizing that he is not alone in the water. That is definitely an elbow pressing into his stomach and a knee digging into his side. He blinks stupidly for a second and attempts to disentangle himself from the person (girl???) he'd apparently run into when something else in the water catches his eye.

Something large and not at all man made and heading right towards them and—NO THANK YOU. Kon has seen this movie and he is out of the water and hovering in the air so fast he doesn't even have time to say hello to the (definitely a) girl in his arms who he takes with him without a thought. Chivalry is not leaving ladies behind to be eaten by giant...things.]

What'd, I fall asleep and crash into the set of Jaws 5?!


Base: Open to all (video)

-at is this, like some fancy gadget Robin would—oh hey, is it on? [A face leans into the camera giving everyone a very nice view of a teenage boy with one very stylish fadecut and (one) pierced ear looking like he just walked out of a nineties music video. He steps back when he's sure it's on, eyebrows furrowed for a second before his expression slips into a searching frown.]

Okay so, seeing as there are giant living moving tentacled rock monsters in the ocean, I'm guessing I'm not in Kansas anymore. [Kon's hilarious and would explain the joke to everyone if it wouldn't completely out Superman's identity. Clark ruins all of his fun.] Does anyone know exactly what planet we're on? And what's the deal with this Ursula chick because if she's anything like the one with the tentacles from the movie, I'm not really feeling the trusting her thing. Why does everything here have tentacles...?

I've got about a million questions about what the hell's going on here. Anyone care to fill me in?

[Korra wakes up with a gasp, Kon's unfamiliar voice ringing in her ears. As soon as she registers that she's being carried by some stranger, her reflexes immediately kick in.]

Let go of me! [Holding none of her strength back, Korra struggles and breaks out of his grasp. There's no time to feel victorious, though, as gravity kicks in and she drops back into the water with a loud splash.]

[Kon watches her fall in, eyes unnaturally wide and face a shade or two paler than it was a moment ago. He's too stunned to even begin to react and so it isn't until she pops back up to the surface that he remembers to breathe.

It's ridiculous, completely insane, but for just one second—his view of the girl only in his peripheral, dark hair, dark skin, in his arms hovering over the ocean—for one unbearable second he'd mistaken her for Tana. Impossible. The illusion only lasts a moment before reality sets in (Tana is dead and she isn't coming back) and he takes a better look at the hair that isn't quite dark enough and bright blue eyes that are supposed to be a warm brown. The similarities are superficial and he should have known better.

With far too much effort, he shoves the thoughts down into the back of his mind, eyes darting back to the girl in the water and fixing her with an utterly confused expression.]

Who are you?

[braavado]

Uh, shouldn't I be asking you that? [Korra treads the water easily as she frowns up at him.] You're the one who was carrying...me...

[The anger abruptly drains away, leaving only confusion and surprise in its wake.] You're floating. [She frowns at him.] Are you a spirit?

Well I couldn't just leave you in the water with those things. [He gestures frantically to the reefbacks, and then snorts at her question.]

I'm Superboy. [Obviously.]

[ There's a boy on the network wearing the S. Kara has to blink, not registering anything he says: her focus zeroed in on that symbol. She's never seen him before in her life — familiar about the jaw, maybe, and the eyes, but nothing else. ]

[ She listens for his voice in the base, and tracks him down immediately, folding her arms and watching him. Still in the dark blue diving suit from the little exploring she was doing outside in the water, hair not even towelled dry. ]

I was hoping you could tell me.

[His attention immediately swivels over to the (very pretty) blonde staring at him as if he's the one acting asking weird questions. Kon has no idea why she thinks he knows anything about the situation but he hovers over to her anyway, shooting her a boyish smile and cocking his head to one side. (He's not interested but that doesn't mean he doesn't have eyes.)]

I've got absolutely nothing, but if you're just as lost as me then maybe we can figure this out together? Two heads and all that.

[highflights]

[ He can fly. Kara's eyes narrow; Kon's friendliness rolls off her immediately. She jabs towards the S. ]

Who are you?

[Wow, and here he'd thought he'd finally established himself enough not to get that question anymore. With a poorly concealed frown, he shrugs.]

Superboy. [First Korra and now this girl. All he'd wanted to do today was go 'home' and watch Wendy the Werewolf until he passed out. This day sucks.]

[ a fairly pretty teenaged blonde girl answers, from one of the labs on base. she's claimed a desk and such and is basically just tapping away on her computer as she answers. ]

Iniidae is the planet name; it doesn't seem to be in the same galaxy as Earth, apparently, and even then I'm not sure it's in the same dimension most people are from. Next question?

[Oh hey, he definitely notices the prettiness, and also the intent focus on the computer screen. Somehow he always finds the nerds.]

Never heard of it. [Different dimension, there it is. He'd been suspecting but hadn't been willing to say it out loud.]

Why are we here and whose ass do I have to kick to get us all home?

[ she'll at least turn to the communicator fully after another minute, frowning at the laptop but giving up whatever she'd been focused on. ]

That's the question, isn't it? Almost everyone seems to have a different opinion on that...or differing memories as to how they got here and why. I remember being specifically sent on a quest, but I'm fairly certain that's false, now.

[ because. everyone else is so weird and has different memories about how and why they're here? she could still be on a quest, but the memories, while solid, make no logical sense when weighed with everything else. ]

As long as we're here, however, URSULA - the base AI - seems to want us to help her terraform the planet. There are apparently no punishments for not doing that, though.

[He frowns at that and crosses his arms.]

You're saying someone messed with all of our memories? [That doesn't sound right. He doesn't feel like anything's weird with his memory. He'd gone towards the vortex and then blacked out though, so there might be something missing there. He just figured that was standard 'get knocked out and wake up somewhere else' missing memory though. His frown deepens.]

So not an evil AI bent on torture and murder. That's good to know. How long have people even been stuck here?

She doesn't have tentacles. Yet. We're working to rectify that, however. She has little in common with the Disney villain of the same name.

[Okay aside from the whole not on his Earth and possibly kidnapped or something to an alternate dimension, this place isn't so bad. There are so many pretty blondes he isn't sure what to do with himself.

Wait what did she say.]

You're trying to give her tentacles?

Yes, of course. I've been met with some opposition-- some believe her physical form should have teeth, or be a crab, but I hope in the end people will see the sense in giving her the tentacles she deserves.

Yo. You're gonna have to narrow down "a million questions about what the hell's going on here" 'cuz I got some other stuff to do today, too.

[Rude AF. He demands a refund on this 'real world' thing.

And since a few of the others have already explained some of what's going on, that leaves the most important things.]

If we're all stuck here for who knows how long, where do people eat and sleep? Also, why are we even under water and not on the couple of islands I keep hearing about? They too small or something? I mean this thing is a giant glass Micky D's playground in the ocean, how is that not an accident waiting to happen?

The accident already happened. We had some pretty serious structural damage during a hurricane about two weeks back.

We're much more protected down here than on the islands, though, which are totally exposed to both the elements and natural predators. People who came not knowing how to fight or survive in the wilderness don't stand a chance setting up shop in a place like that. There's a bunch of other reasons, like all our filtration equipment and URSULA and records are here, but I mostly wouldn't want to see people get hurt. There's plans to reinforce the base and create our own island attached to it, which should solve some of the safety issues.

There's a dining hall, kitchen, and some new residences. I can take you around if you like a little later -- it's Rin Matsuoka, by the way.

[He takes all of that in with a frown, not liking any of it but not seeing a better alternative. If there were predators up on the land, that'd cause a lot of problems for people who couldn't defend themselves.] I think I'll take you up on that tour later.

[For now his thoughts are stalled elsewhere.]

I talked to a girl who said she was working on creating the island and doing some stuff with the base. Is that what you're talking about? [He doesn't know the details, he just knows she wanted to fix things with the design. His brain automatically filters out nerd talk.]

'Cause if hurricanes happen often, I'd definitely like to get on that whole reinforcing thing sooner rather than later. We're a bunch of sitting ducks here. Glass ducks even. [Oh yeah.] I'm Superboy. You can call me Kon.

[ she considers all of his questions and decides to zero in on the most important one. ] URSULA is really nice and hasn't done anything that warrants suspicious directed at her. So please try to be nice to her and about her, you might hurt her feelings!

I'm just not sure how I feel about anyone named Ursula. Seems like a pretty suspicious name. [Also the whole AI thing because it's not like that's never gone poorly before. Even if Red Tornado was alright.]

So what's her deal then? She runs this place or what?

It's a super cute name, there's nothing wrong with it!

She keeps all of our systems running and helps us when she can, but there isn't anyone in charge here.
