March Intro: Head First

≡U.R.S.U.L.A. NAVIGATION

Arrival!
It was supposed to be a routine mission. Maybe you think you’ve been here for a bit or maybe you just arrived. Either way, you know there was supposed to be a completely normal underwater mission, probably just gathering resources, unless you just arrived, in which case welcome!

Unfortunately, somehow you’ve been dumped somewhere you shouldn’t be. A woman’s voice can be heard, robotic in tone with hints of emotion. That emotion mostly seems to be mild surprise.

"Life signs detected. Life forms are non-native to this planet. They... oh. Oh dear, I wasn’t prepared after all. Please refrain from dying for a moment. Your things are incoming."

Your eyes open underwater. At least you're near the surface. But the moment you break through you'll notice one thing: the ocean, stretching out for miles around you in all directions with no end in sight and only a very distant gleaming metal structure in the far distance. You're not alone but this surely isn't what you expected. In fact, you really can't understand how you managed to get from where you were to underwater so fast.

None of your belongings are with you save the clothing on your body. And the depths below you offer no comfort, the light engulfed before it can reach wherever the sea bottom is.

Somewhere, you hear a sound shaking through the water, like something between a whale and a foghorn.

No turning back now.

Prompts!
A: WHALE OF A TALE
As it turns out, there is hope for those who can't swim or get help from someone who can. Something emerges from the depths, a massive bed of coral that makes that strange sound, allowing people to climb on top of it. Of course, that bed of coral is actually the back of a massive creature that moves how it pleases and occasionally dives back down underwater.

There is a pod of them around the area calling to each other. They're friendly, or at least they don't seem to mind any poking or hangers on. But one of their long tendrils may still give you a good whack on accident.

If you’re really lucky you can probably ride one all the way back to the base. Wouldn’t that be a fantastic entrance?

B: HELP ARRIVES
At least, some assistance arrives. Strange little robots on propellers arrive fifteen or so minutes later, rushing to the scene carrying a floating bin of some sort. They drop it into the ocean and buzz excitedly around it in the hopes of luring people over.

Inside the bin are goggles, breathing devices and knives enough for the new arrivals. The knives have a compass on the hilt that has a marker for the direction of the base. One robot will play a helpful recording from the robotic woman for those getting their gear:

"Please deposit any articles of clothing getting in the way of swimming in the bin. We will be sure they arrive safely at the base. Do not try to swim in anything that will bog you down."

A pause.

"Swimming nude is not recommended. There can be... unpleasant issues. For future reference, please consult me before going on missions like this."

C: UNDER THE SEA
Of course, there's no reason to rush right to the base. This place is certainly beautiful in its own right and has a few caves to explore - watch those stingers hanging from the ceilings - with an abundance of strange and wonderful fish eager to either play with you or dart away as fast as possible. Of course there's plenty of Reefbacks still calling to each other and a large amount of floating rocks with Floaters attached.

D: MATING SEASON
On second thought, maybe heading to the base is a good idea. Occasionally you might see plumes of dust near the ocean floor. Exploring these is a very bad idea. The moment you get close, a Sand Shark will explode out of the sand, ready to attack. They range from five to eight feet in length and will pursue you without mercy. At least they give up if you get near the surface or hide in the right caves.

Unfortunately, it's mating season. That means dozens of them can appear at any time trying to court a female with acts of aggression and skill. And you really don't want to be in the middle of that.

E: HOME SWEET HOME
You did it! You made it to the base. You are probably dead tired by now having swam quite a long distance—or somehow riding a Reefback all the way here—and the sun is beginning to set. Upon arrival, URSULA will welcome you and give you a quick rundown of the lockers (where your personal items can be found, as safe as if you stored them there yourself) and the base's layout if you’re new. She will also recommend that you put on your communication device and settling in. She will then just as quickly apologise by saying that she must finish preparing the base for the others.

"Please give me a few days to finish retooling the base. Oh, I'm so excited. We're going to make a great team, I promise. And don't go back to that biome yet until mating season is over. Sand Sharks are... troublesome."

F: WILDCARD
The ocean is yours to explore! Maybe your characters will find places to take breaks. Maybe they'll start gathering things. Maybe they'll murder fish! Or maybe they'll get lost in the dark and take a rather long time to find the base. Or just crash the kitchen for some of that delicious fish, more fish and seaweed! It's all up to you!

See the Biomes page for the currently accessible areas or details on current wildlife and the Base page for all your base needs. Direct any questions and plotting to the OOC post and have fun!

[Ibtisam absolutely thinks she's been here for a while, and is pain free and fully mobile despite fuzzy memories of being horribly injured when her fighter crashed. She vaguely thinks she was gathering resources and got blown off-course by an unexpected current, out here to a more dangerous section of ocean.

She's come down near the ocean floor, fins wavering to keep her still, because she's found her R2 droid trundling across the bottom and is exclaiming at it.]

"How in the worlds did you end up out here?"

[It gives her a mournful Beep. Woooo. Very eloquent. If you're nearby you could catch her attention.]
tyrian: (follow me follow me yeah let's go)

Feferi Peixes

[personal profile] tyrian 2016-03-01 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Feferi is sure she just arrived--Feferi is sure she just died. But, well, look at all this ocean! Look at all these fish! Look at all this adventure! If she's dead, exploring is fine. Adventure is fine. Any previous concerns are lost in the waves.]

B
[Feferi doesn't need the goggles--she's already wearing a pair. But the knife and the compass she gladly takes. It looks like the compass is telling her which direction she should be going in... Which means she can afford to tread water and giggle at those who are less well-prepared for the water.]

Why would you go swimming in that? Do you want to drown?

[In spite of the words, she doesn't sound cruel about it. She just thinks it's funny!]

D
[Those nearby may have watched Feferi gamely trying to make friends with every unruly sand shark that explodes up out of the sand after her. She's tried talking and petting and feeding it (well, alright, she hadn't had a lot of feeding options, maybe they don't like weird alien seaweed), and still they keep jumping out to attack her! Feferi is quick and agile, though, flitting and looping away before they can actually get their teeth on her.

Then, apparently, she decides enough is enough, because the next time one lunges, she lunges right back, aiming to stab it in the eyes with her knife. To anyone nearby, she calls out:]

Don't just float there! We could get some dinner this way!

E
[It's no castle, but home sweet home nonetheless! Feferi is still dripping wet, but she doesn't seem to mind, instead making for the lockers. Her stuff is supposed to be here, right? She finally finds and opens her locker... And pulls out a golden trident, pronged on both sides, as if this is a totally normal item to have.]

There you are. [It's not her most powerful one, but it has a classic appeal.]

[Sasasul has been having the worst day.

Upon realizing she was in the ocean (!!!!!) under the surface (!!!!!) she'd screamed, letting out a great burst of bubbles and flailing. If a reefback hadn't rose up as she started to sink and carried her to the surface, she would have drowned. She hacks up water and holds still, kneeling with her hands down against the creature's broad coral-crusted surface, and starts to shiver.]

A: WHALE OF A TALE
[Mikleo's seen the ocean before, but he's never been in it. Honestly, he can think of a hundred better introductions to it than this. None of them include the pounding headache he woke up with when he hit the water, or the sheer amount of salt in the stuff, or the way that as far out as he can feel, the ocean doesn't...seem to have...an end...?

The Reefback's appearance doesn't help his confusion, though the beast itself doesn't feel bad, and he's grateful enough not to have to try and swim in this state. While it's hanging about at the surface, he'll boost himself up and brace himself on hands and knees on its back, coughing and wiping seawater out of his eyes until he can have a look around.

Maybe you're up there with him, and want to say hi to your new strange...well, whalefellow, if you're able to tell he's there? Or maybe you're flailing around nearby, and need some assistance getting fished out of the water yourself -- he has a way to manage that well enough, even if you can't see where the help is coming from.]

C: UNDER THE SEA
[One way or another (probably Sorey's fault), he's gotten coaxed off the relative safety of the Reefback and back into the water, paddling awkwardly over the entrance to one of the lovely-looking undersea caves. It does look pretty tempting to explore down there, but...]

Look, isn't it better to wait until we've found that -- that base that person was talking about, before we go jumping into things?

[It's perfectly reasonable!]

E: HOME SWEET HOME?
[Well, that trip was embarrassing, educational and exhausting -- and he's now pretty ragged at the edges from Sand Sharks getting snappy -- but at least the promised base is real. The moment he's out of the water he's wringing it out of his clothes with a twist of magic, tossing it back into the ocean behind him. Not the best move when he's tired, but he just really, really wants to be dry right now.

There's a glittering flurry of salt crystals left behind, which looks sort of weird as they cascade off his clothes into the air. If you can't sense him, things will get even weirder -- one of the lockers slams of its own accord, and Ursula starts giving the rundown to nobody in particular...? What the heck?

...if you CAN sense him, well, he's leaned against the locker door he banged once her spiel is done, arms folded, quietly and obviously fuming.]

None of that answered my question, though! Why are we even here?
tyrian: (between the two of us)

[personal profile] tyrian 2016-03-01 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
[A screaming and flailing creature definitely stands out to Feferi. She surfaces beside the reefback to get a better look at this coughing, shivering alien, treading water with only a few adjustments to account for the reefback's lazy pace.]

Hey! [Feferi waves, to draw some attention to herself.] Are you okay?
civilserpent: (8)

[personal profile] civilserpent 2016-03-01 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ah!

[She doesn't have facial expressions beyond 'gape mouth open', but Sasasul's head jerks on her long neck and her forked tongue flicks and withdraws. Her clothes are soaked and clinging to her.]

I am... I do not enjoy the water.
tyrian: (as it flows through my eyes)

[personal profile] tyrian 2016-03-01 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Really? [Well, she certainly doesn't look dressed for the water. Hard to tell what her face is saying, though. Oh well, she can probably learn!] Then how'd you end up here?
civilserpent: (11)

[personal profile] civilserpent 2016-03-01 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Sasasul sits up, still kneeling with her tail behind helping balance her, so that she can clutch at herself with her arms.]

In truth I am not sure. I... knew there was an ocean here but I did not intend to be in it.
tyrian: (between the two of us)

[personal profile] tyrian 2016-03-01 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Feferi looks around. Weird alien snake, weird alien whales, water, water, water... She turns back again.] I don't think you have a choice right now!

[Lancer slowly opens up his eyes. Water? He's certain it is. Maybe it's just a dream. Maybe...

Wait. He opens up his eyes widely and realizes that this is actually real. Trying to get as much oxygen as he could, Lancer swims out to find out what happens..]

D. Let's Take Out These Sand Sharks

[As he swims around, Lancer occasionally finds plums of dust near the ocean floor. His curiosity takes him to take a look, which turns out to be a very bad idea. A sand shark suddenly appears and assaults him. It manages to bite his left shoulder, but Lancer swiftly pushes it away and gives a few kicks and punches before actually taking it down.

He stands there not realizing that this is a mating season. Suddenly he senses more are coming to his end, maybe because they sense his blood pondering away. Now there are like 4 or 5 sharks surrounding him. He looks around to gauge the situation while trying to cover his bloody shoulder.]

Man, what a great day to start...

[If you are around you can see a blue haired guy in the middle of those sharks. Maybe help him out or you can leave him be to take care of the sharks before coming out.]

E. Home Sweet Home?

[After that long fights and journey Lancer actually makes it to the base on his own. It seems that the patrol help does not reach him. Exhausted, injured, and clueless, he is greeted by some personnel that brings him into the base. This thing "URSULA" tries to explain the stuffs he does not even want to hear. Luckily, after he heads into the locker he finds his clothing, precious Runes and his signature red spear. He is astonished. At least those people are saying the truth about his stuffs being here. As he's trying to wear his clothes he sighs..]

How on earth do I even get into this place?

[A few grumpy comments until he realizes that someone is staring at him.]

Hmm? Why are ya lookin' at me like that?

[Is it you? Let's discuss our situation together.]

F. Wildcard

[During the ocean explorations, you might stumble to Lancer while he's trying to get few fish or when you both are lost in the depth darkness of the sea or even meeting him in a random caves!. Or maybe you meet each other at the base trying to cook, relax yourself, looking out to the see through the observatory or even anything! If you have something in mind to interact with him, Lancer is everywhere and ready!]

[In all of these, you might notice that this sucker (get it, he's an octopus) isn't wearing goggles or a breathing apparatus. What's up with that?? In fact, if you watch him long enough he seems to be breathing perfectly fine underwater...]

C.
[You're probably taking the time to explore. Maybe you're making your way through a cave or swimming around an outcropping of rock when you see it--

Tentacles, disappearing around a corner not far ahead. You might think AHH, SEA CREATURE or maybe you'll think OH LOOK DINNER I LOVE CALAMARI but either way, anyone who continues through one of the caves will find Fukami soon enough. He's examining the plants that grow here, while a few persistent fish poke around him. Occasionally, one tentacle will wave as though to shoo them off but they just keep coming back.

You'd think they'd be more nervous around an octopus...]

D.
[Well, now he's done it.

But in this case, it's not as though it was his fault. How was he to know some stupid sharks were mating? Ugh. Sharks. Typical. Fukami is speeding upward through the water toward the surface, his lips compressed with faint annoyance.

It's annoying because there're at least six sand sharks in pursuit... One that might break off and head toward you as the others give up the ghost once Fukami is close enough to the surface.

At which point Fukami stops himself mid-swim, turning toward the shark headed your way.]

E.
[Base sweet base. Fukami arrives with little ceremony-- an octopus don't need to cling on to no reefback to get around! He's dripping as he lifts one gloved hand to comb some of his hair back from his eyes. Maybe you'll notice he dries fairly quickly.

These clothes were made to be worn underwater, okay?

Or maybe you'll catch him opening up the locker that is his and-- pulling out a plate of what appears to be a roast bird. Well, that's not strange at all.]

...

[I thought I gave that to Wadanohara. There's no way anyone could tell that's what Fukami's thinking right now, probably...]

[Lancer does notice him for quite a while now. He does what Lancer does a few moments ago, except this boy does it longer. Lancer crosses his arms as well while leaning on his own locker.]

Slamming the locker ain't gonna help ya kid. Y'know we're kinda stuck here.

[At least Lancer is a bit more calmer. Instead of putting his energy on his anger, let's just see what these people has to offer.]

B.

[ There's a small, green woman flailing her limbs in the water and glaring at the small droids. It seems like she's arguing with them, although the water resistance gives her movements a surreal quality, since it's like watching some gesture in slow motion. There's also a lot of splashing and a high-pitched voice complaining.

Loudly.
]

I keep telling you, I don't need to take off my appearance modifiers! I don't even need to breathe!

[ She does pick up a pair of goggles. After a moment of muted glaring and treading water she slips them over her bedraggled hair and lets the lenses rest just above her visor.

It's an odd look.
]

Why did we agree to come to this place...?

[ She's asking everyone, really. Or maybe herself. ]

E.

[ Peridot is sopping wet (naturally) and she's quite busily trying to dry herself off. The equipment she's been given hangs off of her awkwardly, as if she's not quite sure how some of it ought to work. She wipes a sheen of water off of her visor and glares at the ceiling, muttering under her breath as URSULA makes her explanation. Today has been very strange. Not to mention that she thought her arrival would be a bit more... organized. ]

This is incredibly inefficient.

[ She's complaining at the nearest person. ]

Why couldn't they have prepared the base for us before we arrived?

[ She glances down at the communication device that she's been given and then holds it out, waggling it imperiously. ]

I require your... assistance.

[ She waits expectantly. ]

[ Peridot has already decided that she doesn't really like this part of her new job. Terraforming? Sure, that sounded like something she could do - but she's a technician, not a soldier. Fighting is one of her secondary capabilities. She's been trying to avoid the sand sharks, but considering that they're everywhere, she hasn't exactly been successful.

She has avoided becoming shark-bait. At least so far. Her response probably doesn't inspire confidence.
]

Are you insane? I don't even need to eat! We should just avoid them!

[ Speaking of which, Peridot flails out of the way of a second shark that's been attracted by all the ruckus. ]

-get away from me-!

[Mai is exhausted. She can't, in fact, swim, so it was a matter of luck and those whales and a few other shenanigans that made it so that she didn't drown on her very first day, but she's just leanings against one of the walls, breathing hard and dripping everywhere (exhaustion and fear work together to make things really hard), but.... well, when she hears that, she looks up despite herself, bangs dripping water into her eyes.]

Eh...? Me?

[A quick glance around reveals that... she's the only one here. Oh. So she tries to push herself up on trembling legs to step closer.]

Um... what do you need?

[Mai can't even swim.

She definitely didn't want this, because, well....she can't swim. She's been outfitted with a breathing apparatus and goggles by now, at least, but ineffectual flailing and attempted doggy paddling can only get her so far.

So.

When that shark suddenly breaks off to come straight at her, she definitely just sort of...freezes up pathetically.

GOODBYE, CRUEL WORLD.]

[She's definitely flailing around uselessly nearby, that was her true calling in life.

See, the unfortunate thing about being dumped into the ocean is that...Mai can't swim. She somehow managed to flail herself to the surface, coughing and gasping, but she looks about ready to slide right back beneath the waves at any moment, eyes wide and terrified.

Pls help.]

A...are you okay?

[Mai's only alive due to that very same reefback whale; honestly, she's incredibly grateful for it.

But even as she drips and clings to the whale as well, she can't help but be concerned.

Even if she is a snake. Even so! Still, she's concerned.]

Mai's eyes widen despite herself (she's drooping, and dripping, but even so she's still incredibly impressed by...well, that giant trident), and her mouth goes a little slack.]

... Isn't that dangerous...?

[Yeah, that's kind of the idea, Mai.]

[ Peridot probably isn't much better in terms of being exhausted, but that just makes her more irritable. She scowls at Mai and thrusts the communicator at her again. She's surrounded by humans and even if she's started to like Earth and people more than she lets on, she's still not all that happy about any of this. Her voice is a snap. ]

Just strap this stupid thing to my wrist!

[Oh jeez, he's not the only one who got thrown out here?! She's clearly human, but -- whatever, he's not going to let someone drown right in front of him. He'll reach out a hand without hesitation, trying to focus past the pain in his head, calling his staff to him.]

Hang on...!

[Catapulting her onto the Reefback with Twin Flow? No, that's going to hurt, and might make the thing dive. Instead, he hauls his staff back and drags with his magic at the same time. Mai will feel herself pulled forward in a strange small bubble of air and water that keeps her from sinking further, rolling her towards the Reefback's side.]

O-oh! [The snap does make Mai jump--but she's quick to try to do what Peridot requests (or orders, really), reaching for the communicator and fumblingly managing to strap it to her wrist.

What a scary lady......

And when she's finished, she peers up tentatively from beneath her bangs.]

Is...that okay? It isn't too tight, right?

[It's... really hard to say what just happened. One second she's pretty sure that's the end for her, she's going to drown, and it feels strangely familiar--and in the next, she's pulled towards this giant whale. Beggars can't be choosers, and as soon as she's close enough, she's dragging herself onto said Reefback, coughing and gasping, dripping water everywhere.

But eventually she does manage to get a hold of herself, looking up at her savior with a weak, but undeniably grateful smile.]

[He twitches a bit when Lancer speaks up. Not human...? Not seraph, either, but able to see him. Well, all right. Maybe he'll be more helpful than that strange disembodied voice; Mikleo's tone is politer when he answers, anyway, if not exactly friendly.]

The last I remember, I was nowhere near the ocean, much less ready to settle in here. It's a bit of a scene change.
