August Pre-Hurricane Post | Open Mingle

[It's the calm before the storm—or at least the not-quite-so-bad-weather before the storm. The winds are starting to pick up, the ocean is rolling, and all manner of sea creature is heading for cover to ride things out.

But at the base, there's still lots to do as usual. Whether it's getting ready to hunker down, goofing off, or making friends, there's never a dull moment under the sea! Have at it, and remember to check out the OOC planning/mission signups to see what's going on!]

[ there is definitely free paper. hajime brought a lot for this task. ]

I taught myself. I like doing crafts in general, not just this.

[ almost every item she had brought with her from home is somehow related to arts and crafts. she'd be somewhat bored without something to make. ]

I like your turtle.

Thanks. [He smiles, a little shyly.] My father... [Hesitating a little, but... he's been here long enough, and nobody has hurt him yet...] My father taught me this. It's good for concentration.

There's not as much work to do here as I'd like sometimes. [Said sort of quietly, as he folds another crane to go with Hajime's first.]

What kind of work are you interested in?

[ admittedly, what they can do here is limited to whatever resources they can find lying around, and most of that comes from shipwrecks so it might not be in the best condition. it's not like there's a store they can just pop into.

Pretty much anything that keeps my mind busy. [That was maybe too candid, so he dials it back a bit:] I like to have something to think about, and Iniidae's just crazy-full of possibilities. You're new, right? How's it like for you to be here?

[He's trying not to make assumptions; the plain-looking human types sometimes aren't even human, and maybe she's from a world where aliens are normal. She doesn't seem to find Don weird, anyway.]

It's been super interesting! It's like you said, there's always something to do here, even if you stay inside the base all day.

[ since someone is always getting into some type of mess here. ]

I want to help everyone as much as I can.
bonomial: (I'll have what they're having)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-08-26 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great attitude to have. What do you think you're best at?

[He asks this as he folds another crane:] Since you seem to be a fan of arts and crafts, maybe you'd like to do something artistic? That's definitely not my forte. [The best Don can manage is a stick figure. And then it kicked him in the leg, because magic pencil.]

[personal profile] sniptuck 2016-08-27 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone can be artistic if they try! Not everything has to be a Picasso painting, you know. As long as you enjoy what you're doing and tried, it's art. And art also comes in many different shapes and forms, too, so it doesn't just have to be like this.

[ she gestures at the paper animals. ]

I think I mostly like helping people though.
bonomial: (don't worry I got this)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-08-28 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm used to thinking of art like sculptures and paintings, but I guess paper folding's a kind of art too. It's more mathematical then just drawing, unless you're drawing lines with a ruler, or in some kind of vector software.

[Helping people... yeah, Don likes to help people.] So that's why you're prettying this place up?

Uh huh!

[ and also because she likes pretty things? ] I figured it would be much more cheerful if we made the base nicer looking. Not everyone might be too happy about being so down below the surface.
bonomial: (fine by me)

It is weird to wake up underwater. The biggest difference from my home is how quiet it is.

[Even living at the Lair he built from the abandoned drainage junction, there was more noise than the omnipresent silence of an alien ocean.]

Making it a little brighter in here's a good move. It's cheery. [And unobtrusive, and totally Japanese.]

If you want, you can help me decorate more later! Things are a lot more fun when there's more people doing it.

[ she finishes folding another crane and sets it aside. ] If you're free.
bonomial: (satisfied with myself)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-08-30 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have anything pressing I need to do. [He smiles.] What kind of decorations are we talking? Just as many paper cranes as you can make?

[May as well start making another one then, this one in a bright, vibrant red.]

[personal profile] sniptuck 2016-08-31 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
If you have any ideas, we can do them! The sky's the limit!

[ hajime looks up. ]

Or the ceiling.
bonomial: (having an idea)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-09-01 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Touché.]

I'd probably ask around. My own sense of proper décor might not fit what anyone else'd want. [He lived in a sewer, which tends to involve getting used to a lot of things most people don't care for in their dwellings.] Countering the feeling of claustrophobia's a good start, though.

[personal profile] sniptuck 2016-09-01 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ tbf it's not like hajime is asking people how they want the placed decorated. she's just... doing it... ]

I think it'll still be nice if you put in some of your own ideas though. Everyone has a different point of view.
bonomial: (did I do that)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-09-06 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
[What would be Don's point of view?]

Well, I am missing some of the textures from home. Wood and stone just aren't common building materials here. [He quickly adds:] Not that it'd make much sense to build with wood. That would get ruined by seawater.

Still, I kinda miss it.

Maybe we can make wooden tables and cabinets? Those are easy to replace if they get damaged. And it'll be a nice way to spice things up!

[ you can only have so much metal in your life. ]
bonomial: (having an idea)

[personal profile] bonomial 2016-09-19 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
You're a woodworker? [He probably shouldn't be surprised, but maybe he is.] I don't know much about it myself - I'm more used to working with metal myself. Wonder if the wood from the local trees is any good to work with?
