[picture this: a tray of all sorts of fish, spread out over a table. hoverfish, hoopfish, rabbit ray, garryfish, spadefish, boomerang fish, bladderfish--something elaborate and fancy looking, like a seafood platter, but with alien fish.]

Behold.

[the voice comes from behind the camera, which then zooms up from the fish platter onto a very sleepy, but alarmed makoto, who doesn’t know where to look.]

What... am I beholding, exactly? Haru?

[a knife points at an eyeless spadefish from behind the camera, the eye being replaced with sea grass.]

Hah...?

[makoto continues being alarmed, if only a little confused?]

I made breakfast.

It’s four in the morning.

That's why it's breakfast.

For a family of ten?

You're not the only one here.

[makoto's expression turns scared; he glances around quickly, left and right, finds nothing but the darkened background of the kitchen. clearly, he thinks there's someone else here.]

Eh!?

[haru, blankly, without being deterred by makoto’s disrespectful response, and with a slight hint of passion in his voice. it's barely there, but a fine ear can notice it.]

That's why you should try it. [enter, knife motioning at platter]

[and the feed cuts off]

[some time later, makoto edits and attaches a text message:]

[ despite the nightmares and exhaustion that's come with them yuri's been itching for excitement. one can only get so much by going and fighting monsters outside of the base. which, while fun, can get a bit repetitive.

he knows there's one person that he's been itching to get a good spar with someone (by which he means no holding back) so he goes to reach out to them.

and not realizing it the rest of the base as well. look he's exhausted and forgot but the confidence in his voice is there ]

Hey. You. What do you say to a good fight. No holding back. I'll know if you are. And don't tell me you haven't been itching for some excitement.

[ because if he has the other person bound to be too right? .... and other people in the base in this case.

come. accept his challenge even if it wasn't meant for you he'll take on everyone here. ]

Hello base! I think everyone has noticed by now that the dreams we're having aren't very fun, are they? I was talking to Number One and he thinks that maybe we should do a big sleepover? Even if it doesn't work to stop the nightmares, it might make some people feel a little better to be around others.

[ because cuddle piles are the best remedy tbh? ]

Hmmm, obviously you don't have to join in if you don't like the idea. But if you want to give it a try, we can move a bunch of pillows and blankets into one of the bigger observatories! Ah, that's it, bye bye!

[THIS MONTH: KINDA YIKES.

i. nautical nightmares

with the Sea Dragon angry, the dreamscape's a worse place to be in, and sleep thoroughly unpleasant. are you living through your nightmares of transformation, isolation and helplessness, or falling into other people's? or are you trying to drag them out, via the Song Dirk and Shiro alerted the base to, or via more (less?) conventional means?

maybe you're a lucky soul who's avoided the nightmares for a few precious hours, and used your time in the dreamscape to other purposes.

ii. watery waking

are you awake and watching over dreamers? or just plain trying to avoid sleep yourself, whether it's through chugging coffee, or running experiments, or base-building, or decorating the base for the upcoming Halloween festivities? or maybe you're marathoning URSULA's entire archive of 1950s instructional videos.

what? those things are fascinating.

iii. seascape shenanigans

...or maybe you're up to something else entirely. but what is it?

[Well, Bucky’s reached his limit. As if the calm in T’Challa’s palace wasn’t already nerve-wracking enough, he’s now on a veritable life-long vacation by comparison, and there’s no training facility in the damn base. Shadow boxing only gets you so far. He doesn’t like drawing publicity, but he’s running out of options, and he knows better than to ask the obvious suspects, especially since variety is good and bolsters adaptation on the fly.]

[ ada has, more or less, spent the last month mostly doing her own thing. from reading up on the past information in order to get a better idea of what's occurred before her arrival to finding out new ways to establish a routine for eve's sake, she's been keeping herself fairly busy.

and she keeps finding new ways to occupy her time. she's in the kitchen at the moment, a pair of wires clenched firmly between her teeth as she attempted to get the repair kit she had on the table to finally work with her.

between the repair kit and the tools she had taken from the lab and the rough schematics and notes she had been taking, the table she was occupying looked less like a table and more like a warzone.

it'll be a few minutes until she realised there was someone near her ]

Oh. Sorry about that. [ would that be enough to satisfy eve?

Hello?

I hope I'm not bothering anyone at the moment but I simply wanted to know if everyone has been faring well today. After all it's been quite a month, hasn't it? Never thought I would find myself being part of anything... like this, to be honest.

One minute I was with my sister in the park and the next minute, I'm here! It's been quite an adventure so far. Storms and all.

[ The kitchen is patched up. The shower hallway is fixed. The worst of the hurricane that busted holes in their base seems to be over, and everyone can go outside again. Everything should be fine now.

Except for all these newcomers?? They won't stop coming. The base is packed, always. It's mildly stressful, and so to help Loki find his happy comfort zone, he fixes himself a mug of tea and heads over to the library for a bit of quiet time. There are so many people loitering around in the hallways this morning that he has to carefully weave his way around, avoiding stray elbows and hustling pedestrians. But perhaps it was inevitable -- he turns a corner, only to run into one Hinata Hajime.

His mug falls to the floor. Hot tea splashes on the walls and at their feet, the violent streaks remnants of Loki's hopes and dreams for the morning. Explicit tea gore, everywhere. Loki stares at the liquid carnage in shock. Then he begins to shake. And like a volcano, he explodes. ]

[ Next, he points up at Hinata. ]

You. You're helping with this.

(( OOC: The actual building of rooms and furniture can be handwaved! Despite what Loki says, pretty much anyone can have a room. They'll be big 6-person rooms to share with your fellows. [ it's dark, and cramped, and rose can't see a damn thing. as far as she knows, she had been hunting down the remaining iris gems with the party, but there was a wide crack she overlooked in those annoying ruins, and said ruins weren't very stable. she didn't expect the resulting crash to land her in a place like this, though. rose is getting sort of tired of surprises.

there's something rattling around in here with her, too, and she's well aware that for all she knows, it could be dangerous. rose squirms a little and then, with a grunt, gives the inner wall of the capsule the hardest kick she can manage. hard enough to break it and send her and some type of trinket tumbling to the ground. that's a start. ]

Owww... Man, what the hell was that all about? And you guys wonder why I can't stand places like this! Hey, Sorey, can you hear me up there?

[ no answer. not even an echo. more importantly, rose can't feel the presence of the seraphim anymore, either. it's just her.

when rose glances up to take a look, it takes her a good second to realize that this is not where she thought she was. she's positive that those ruins had been all dried up, but down here? rose has no idea, but it doesn't look like anything's in decay, and that sure is a lot of water she's seeing outside the clear windows. that part is pretty hard to miss. water is sort of mikleo's thing, not hers, and she does not see mikleo.

so... she's lost. great! what are these things, anyway? ]

Uh. Guys? Anyone? A little help, maybe? It smells like fish in here.

[ only then does she notice the little object by her feet. maybe it's an iris gem and she'll luck out, escape, save everyone some trouble, get a pat on the back. rose crouches down and tilts her head before picking up a rose in a bottle. nice. it's totally useless. ]

Ha, ha. Real clever. Giving a cute girl named Rose a rose? Nobody's ever tried that one before. Seriously, way to win me over. I'm swooning. Now, if someone could just--

[ aaaand then the shower goes off before she can ask for help again. seconds later, with an ear-piercing shriek of surprise, rose is drenched from head to toe. she's so loud that anyone anywhere near the shower room will be able to hear her. ]

[ Now that the kitchen is back together and the food is secure what is a better way to celebrate getting this far than a little friendly cooking competition. And to make things more interesting it's even costumed! But the best part? One of your judges is none other than URSULA herself give her a round of applause! Everyone is a winner according to her!

So, are you one of the Judges, going around and tasting everyone's cooking? Maybe you're like URSULA and believes everyone's cooking is great! Or will you be that judge who's blunt and said how it is. Maybe you just want to say everyone's cooking is awful for the hell of it.

If you're not judging the competition maybe you're Cooking in the competition instead! This was a free-for-all, so you were able to use any of the ingredients that they currently have on base. Will you be making a fantastic meal that everyone loves, or will you be one of the ones where the Fire Extinguishers have to come and save the base from burning.

Just remember that you're required to make a costume! And speaking of which, be sure to give your Costume Designers a nice thanks! Even if you end up getting extra frills in your outfit. Or something really bright so you end up blinding everyone.

There's so much to do here in this competition so have fun! Once it's all said and done everyone even gets a nice Personalized Blanket from URSULA. What a nice thank from our favorite AI!

[Past the 9th of the month, the hurricane's finally blown itself out, leaving a great deal of mess behind (but at least, a lot less mess than there would have been without the crew's various antics, right?)

After the calm there's the storm, but after the storm, there's...uh, actually, it's not all that calm again yet. Look at all these notable goings on that you can play with:

SICK PEOPLE are still a thing. Are you still suffering from the ravages of alien cave flu? Finally finding the energy to crawl out of bed? Starting to come down with it yourself? Getting dosed with cure attempts? Doing the dosing? Or maybe you're not sick at all but went hurricane surfing and are now prone in the medbay. It's been a rough couple of weeks.

The HURRICANE'S AFTEREFFECTS still linger. Fish in the base aquariums and biomes are just starting to resume their regular activities. Maybe some of your special fish friends are still spooked and need some coaxing out? Maybe you want to swim out to a more distant biome to check on creatures like the Reefbacks or the Birdogs? Or maybe you want to stick closer to home and do things like finish repairing the busted corridors, and cleaning out the kitchens and showers so the food and bathing situation doesn't descend back into complete travesty.

For those who've started wandering out, there's also FAMILIAR ITEMS washing up -- things from your home, or at least...someone's home. Is an embarrassing photo of you now plastered against an observatory window for the world to see? Your fancy car from home buried in the sand of the Safe Shallows?

Lastly, on the night of the 13th (and subsequent nights...), a distant DISCO LIGHTSHOW becomes totally visible on the horizon, in the Monolith's direction. What the heck? Maybe that's worth checking out.

And of course, there's always PLANNING, MISSIONS AND SHENANIGANS to do. Go nuts!]

[A] The mods said we can make panties now
[After talking to Haruka about the communicators and trying (failing) to figure out how to shut off the memes on his own, Hajime instead went to URSULA to get himself a second communicator. And then he and Haruka decided to rip it apart to find out how it worked with supervision from Dirk.

Sorry if your communicators are now not only showing/playing memes; for a few hours, they're also going to sound rather like chipmunks. Whoops.

Maybe more importantly, with some perseverance and a perhaps a grudge against meme-producing technology, they've found a blueprint to create something called the Fabricator. Which of course they built, because why wouldn't you build something like that.

tl;dr there's now a machine called the Fabricator which characters "can use it to fabricate... fabrics! URSULA is sure they will be pleased to be able to have more than one pair of underwear, as she has noticed that everyone has an odd obsession with hygiene." So go nuts! Hopefully someone knows how to sew...

[B] It's like coffeeshop AU except it's canon
[There's been a new addition to the kitchen! Several new additions, actually, the most notable of which is one of the fancy Starbucks-like coffee machines from the Monolith. It's probably safe to use? No one's died from it yet, anyway. Hajime's also brought back a good amount of the coffee and several different kinds of flavored syrup. It's time to make your coffeeshop AU dreams a reality.

Hajime definitely would have needed help bringing it back, so feel free to steal the credit from him in the end. But it's a mingle! Make your own top-levels, do whatever.]

[ BACKDATED TO EARLIER IN THE MONTH ]

Through what can probably only be called a true holiday miracle, Chiaki sure did get permission to celebrate Tanabata! The decorations and the wishing tree will actually be up over the course of a few days and it would appear that URSULA is joining in - so even if Tanabata isn't your cup of tea, you'll be hearing some Really Annoying Music until you at least share your dreams and wishes!! Amazing. The true meaning of Fundatory.

[ A - MAKE A WISH ]

What could Tanabata be without a tree to hang wishes from?! Of course, a bamboo tree couldn't be grabbed but a pretty lantern tree has been retrieved instead. It's pretty tall - the tallest leaves of it managing to just brush against the ceiling of the room it got planted in, so you can't miss it - so make sure that you get your wishes up there!

For those not familiar, the custom is to write your wish for the year on a slip of paper and then tie your paper onto a branch of the tree. What are you writing? There's a table just for scribbling down wishes set up! Then once you're done, can you even reach the branch? Oh man!

[ B - THE LEGEND ]

Okay but what is Tanabata?

For those not familiar, Chiaki will be performing some sort of embarrassing skit - or if you miss the show, the legend of the literally star-crossed lovers will be written down! It was probably someone else's good idea since you can't expect a teenaged boy to be good at explaining anything. Somewhere off to the side, the scroll will be hanging to detail the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi's legendary romance.

It's sad but sweet, isn't it? Sad enough to make you want to lament your love life with a friend? Or sweet enough to share a bit of gossip and hope? Discuss!

[ C - FESTIVAL'S CLOSING ]

It's the last day of the ship's little makeshift Tanabata festival!

As midnight approaches, you can follow whatever little crowd that Chiaki leads right over to Floater Island. The stars shine down upon the shore as the lantern tree, along with all the wishes that you hopefully decorated it with, is set adrift into the ocean.

A little melancholy, isn't it?

TELEPATHY

Uh, hello! My name is Makoto-- I know I'm rather new to this place, but I couldn't help but notice...

[this is going exactly where you think it's going; makoto sounds a little distressed and surprised that this is even a thing that is happening at all]

Are we really going to manage alright with just one toilet in the entire base...? There's quite some people here, and perhaps it should be one of our priorities to try and build to meet demand?

[exasperation: how could you guys let it come down to this??]

I--I don't know exactly how, but we can build things, right? I wouldn't mind working on it if I get some guidance on how to go about it!

[makoto will be found by the main entrance, wearing his provided wet suit. it's been about a week since the new arrivals made it to the base after the whole incidence in the monolith. that being said, with the dizzying effects of the void song out of his system at last, he can think clearly, but is not any less scared of diving into this ocean for the first time.]

[you'd think he could do more, being a swimmer and all.]

[taking a deep breath, he tries to inch away the anxiety that consumes him in the face of large bodies of water, to accept this reality as not necessarily a dangerous nor scary one. which is why he'll be encouraging himself outloud:]

It's a much bigger group that trickles in to the home base from the monolith, by Seamoth or Seaglide, by magic or tech or just pure swimming power. Some of them are supporting the less aquatically-inclined newbies; some are in dire need of a rest from fighting that Reaper. Fortunately, with all the expansions and additions people made in June, the base isn't bursting at the seams quite yet, but fifty-odd people still makes for quite a crowd...

(VERY LOOSE) PROMPTS:

I. the spirit of discovery
[Newbies, there's so much to do! So much to see! Some of you brought your own things, but you'll also be getting your gear and your nanite modifications at the base, including the handy-dandy telepathy older crew have been demonstrating. There's tech everywhere; experiments and constructs in progress in the lab; a modest library to browse; aquariums of fishy friends; URSULA to meet; perhaps a couple of her helpful drones roving about if you wanted to futz with them. There's the sealife of the Safe Shallows to see (so much less threatening than a Reaper!), either on your way in, or if you sneak out later, or from safely behind glass in the observatory. There's the horrendous discovery that there are now several dozen people in this place, and one single toilet.

Older crew, there's plenty for you too! Are you showing newbies around? Maybe taking a couple to the med bay to rest up, since they came out of that dream business in pretty rough shape? Finding someplace to tuck yourself away after all the excitement, or launching yourself out the nearest hatch to get away from the increased crowd? Maybe some of you recognize each other, and are comparing what you last remember before coming here...]

II. domestic b...liss...?
[A bit later on, with everyone more or less in one place and one piece, maybe it's time to get a bit more organized, or play around a little with what's becoming more familiar. Perhaps it's time for round-robin introductions? Maybe you want to hold cooking lessons and get new people familiarized with what they can eat here. Or swimming lessons so folks can get around more easily. Or, if you're more mechanically-minded, it might be time to consult people and figure out some further expansions and accommodations -- though don't forget that hurricane season is coming. Maybe it's just time to built a giant fort out of all these air mattresses and have the mother of all underwater sleepovers. Your call!]

III. where the wild things are
[For new crew, the Void Song and the ocean still have a powerful pull. The dreamscape appears to still be open for this week, as well.

Do you give in to those strange, sleepy, oceanic impulses and head back out into the water, swimming to who knows where? Are you an older crew member trying to keep newbies from doing that? Maybe one of you sang the Void Song to someone to wake them, and have noticed the effects...]

IV. wildcard
[Have something else in mind? Go for it!]
