It’s been about a month or so since people started arriving to this world and onto the base—a month of shenanigans, exploration, danger, angry sealife and other things. In this still-small base, there’s all kinds of things that characters can do so, therefore, consider this an all-purpose base mingle post.

→ i. it’s a fixer upper
[In the wake of the Aurora explosion, there were quite a few things that needed repairing. Even then, the base itself is by no means complete, with limited room and not even rooms for each and every person. Luckily, there aren’t all that many living in the base! Yet.

But, there’s always something to do. Are you helping with repairs? Trying to decorate the base somehow? Building something new that can add to it? Perhaps you’re one of those in the laboratory, researching what species that this ocean has to offer. Hopefully nothing else is blowing up.

Or are you just standing around, staring wistfully out at the ocean and not contributing at all? I mean, that’s fine, but…]


→ ii. catch of the day
[How’s that seafood? What? You have no idea how to cook it? Well, then.

It’s probably like sushi, where you can eat it raw, right? Or maybe you’re one of those bringing back fresh supplies to the base. Possibly still wriggling around fresh supplies. Can you actually (miracle of miracles) cook some of the fish/other things that are probably fish so that they don’t taste half-bad?

If all else fails, just munch on some seaweed. I hear it’s nutritious.]


→ iii. it’s like a giant sleepover
[Surely there’s nothing awkward about cramming yourself into one of the ‘free’ rooms around the base with your air mattress and curling up there. Have you set out a space for yourself? Found a nice spot where you’re usually alone but uh-oh don't count on that for too long?

Perhaps you’d rather just sleep in the hallway to avoid drifting off near others.

Maybe you just don’t sleep at all or you prefer roaming the base when it gets dark. Nightmares about sea creatures can be a doozy.]

Oh...anything, I think. I was just thinking--um, it was talking to Sorey-san that made me think of it, actually, but...we're going to be living here for awhile, right?

So I was thinking...maybe if we had some books or stories to read, it would be a little more homey.

It's true; just lab notes make for dry reading after a while. You're looking to compile the stories people know?

I think...even if it's not a lot, at least we'll have a little more to read, right...? It might take me a little while to write them all down, but I hope everyone will be patient with me.

A computer would be easiest, I think... then we could type and print the stories. But I don't know if we have any computers for something like that...

I know it's a little silly, compared to the more important missions.

I don't think it's silly at all. It helps us get to know each other, and, well, I have to admit the idea of compiling stories from all different worlds is fascinating.

I can tell you some of the legends from Glenwood, for sure...

[And he looks away, a little embarrassed.]

In exchange, would you mind telling me what a computer is?

[She's quick to nod, smiling a little.]

I'm excited to learn more about Glenwood, but... maybe I can explain a computer first? Um--I'm not really great at computers but I know the basics.

That--sounds reasonable. We just don't have a lot of machines back home, so...

[guess who's been writing in notebooks and trying to map the ocean manually instead of using the databases and other useful things as intended. it's this kid.]

Um...you know the scanner devices in the lab...?

Ah--yes! We've used them on samples sometimes.

[Were those computers ALL ALONG?]

I'm pretty sure that they have computers in them... The computers I'm used to can be used for more things, but they mostly can like...calculate things and you can type things on them and search for things--um, if there's internet, I mean--things like that!

They're used for a lot of things back home... I wonder if we could ever have some here.

[She does miss her laptop a bit.]

So they've got a lot of uses, and they store and record information, but they're that portable? That's amazing! You're right, we could really use more around the base! Maybe we can get some built? Surely if there's some in the guns -- Ursula might have blueprints --

[Whoa, he's so excited.... it kind of makes her smile to see, and she holds her hands up to show him the general width of an average laptop.]

Mm, mine was...about this wide, back home. I could bring it with me to school when I needed to... so they're really handy to have.

I wonder if we could... it'd be nice to have one, I think.

It's really not much bigger than a book...technology is certainly amazing! Just how much can you put on one? Can they do anything else?

Um... a lot.

[Like--they can both do a lot and there's a lot you can put on one.]

I used mine for school, mostly... but you can write things on them, and talk to people on them... you can play games, and write new programs so the computer can do new things... there's so much you can do.

It would be really useful to have one here.

It would be easier than building a full room onto the base to act as a library, for sure...

[Not that he doesn't want that anyway. Or really understand how complicated building a laptop is. But still.]

For a story...hmmm, Sorey'd like to tell you the legend of the Shepherd himself, I bet. I can tell you about the Thunder God's legend? It was carved in the ruins near home.

[She has never heard of either of those, so she's all ears, wide-eyed and eager. It feels like forever since she's done something so...peaceful. Just sharing stories and learning new things--it's nice.]

The Thunder God...? Oh, please do! I would love to hear it!

[He's leaving the Shepherd one to Sorey because Sorey gets way more excitable about it and it's cute, oops.

He'll launch into a story about how the Thunder God was actually just a young lightning seraph who wanted to make friends with people, but every time he came out to greet them his element was so flashy and his voice so loud that he kept scaring the humans off and getting left alone in his shrine. He chose not to bother them anymore, and for a while the skies stayed quiet and the weather calm, but one day shadows fell over the land and a demon descended upon the town below the shrine. For the first time the people called out to the seraph rather than the other way around, and cheered when his lightning flashed and his thunder roared against the demon, driving it away. From then on, their fear vanished, and they were able to become friends.

...it's pretty clearly a romanticized childhood story type thing, but he tells it fondly.]

[It's cute..........it's such a cute story, and Mai's clearly enthralled; she almost forgets to take notes as he speaks. But about halfway through the story she does remember, quickly scribbling down some notes so she can write the story down in its entirety later--

That's such a lovely story, Mikleo-san! Is it true?

I...don't know. It's a very old legend, so of course it's bound to have been embellished a lot over the years, but legends have to start somewhere, right? There are definitely lightning seraphs around -- Gramps is one.

I suppose it's possible for one to mess up with his powers like that if he didn't have any training in controlling them, too...I used to make terrible messes with the water sometimes, when I was little.

We have some stories like that too...I wonder if they're true.

[She never really thought about it but they could be. Look at what exists in all of these other worlds...]

... But really? I can't imagine... you always seem so competent, Mikleo-san!

I--try to be, is all. But no one starts out just knowing these things.

[They're motivated to learn them pretty fast when they grow up with a human best friend, though.]
