It’s been about a month or so since people started arriving to this world and onto the base—a month of shenanigans, exploration, danger, angry sealife and other things. In this still-small base, there’s all kinds of things that characters can do so, therefore, consider this an all-purpose base mingle post.

[In the wake of the Aurora explosion, there were quite a few things that needed repairing. Even then, the base itself is by no means complete, with limited room and not even rooms for each and every person. Luckily, there aren’t all that many living in the base! Yet.

But, there’s always something to do. Are you helping with repairs? Trying to decorate the base somehow? Building something new that can add to it? Perhaps you’re one of those in the laboratory, researching what species that this ocean has to offer. Hopefully nothing else is blowing up.

Or are you just standing around, staring wistfully out at the ocean and not contributing at all? I mean, that’s fine, but…]


→ ii. catch of the day
[How’s that seafood? What? You have no idea how to cook it? Well, then.

It’s probably like sushi, where you can eat it raw, right? Or maybe you’re one of those bringing back fresh supplies to the base. Possibly still wriggling around fresh supplies. Can you actually (miracle of miracles) cook some of the fish/other things that are probably fish so that they don’t taste half-bad?

If all else fails, just munch on some seaweed. I hear it’s nutritious.]


→ iii. it’s like a giant sleepover
[Surely there’s nothing awkward about cramming yourself into one of the ‘free’ rooms around the base with your air mattress and curling up there. Have you set out a space for yourself? Found a nice spot where you’re usually alone but uh-oh don't count on that for too long?

Perhaps you’d rather just sleep in the hallway to avoid drifting off near others.

Maybe you just don’t sleep at all or you prefer roaming the base when it gets dark. Nightmares about sea creatures can be a doozy.]

[The one-sided conversation pauses as Sorey looks over and gives a wave hello, along with nodding in response to Korosensei's question.]

Huh? --Oh, yeah, he's here. We're trying to figure out what's edible and what isn't.

[A telepathic band opens right away, but Korosensei can hear a bit of a scuffle on the other end for a moment (Sorey goes hey, not so loud! That's in my head too! and Mikleo goes Oh--sorry, this is kind of hard, I keep trying to talk both ways--)

Then they must work something out, because it's just Mikleo's voice now, quiet and clear.]

Yes -- did we disturb you? I just realized we were being a bit loud.

[tentaculled]

[ he's actually fairly pleased he guessed right, if the green sheen to his skin is any indication. A short wave of one tentacle accompanies his response. ]

Oh, not at all, not at all! On the contrary, I'm happy to see the two of you. Cooking with others is much more fun than cooking alone, after all. [ apparently, he was going to cook something, although he's now more interested in what the two of them were doing, peering over Sorey's head at the array of seafood samples curiously. ] Were you doing some taste-testing?

[He holds up a bit of jelly plant for Korosensei's inspection.]

Some of the plants we found out in the ocean. I figured if the fish can eat them there's a chance we can too. Nothing's made me sick so far, and this one's pretty good.

My stomach isn't all that settled yet, so I'm giving them a pass right now. But in case something does make him sick, I'm, you know, supervising...

It's true, though, nothing's had an adverse effect yet. The variety's surprising!

That's good to hear! But do keep in mind that you're not a fish. Just because their bodies can handle something doesn't mean that yours will. Luckily, sensei is here to provide emergency medical care if you need it.

[ he'll give you a tentacle heimlich. But later. Right now, he's going to look at that jelly plant - one of his many tentacles snakes out to take it from Sorey, if he'll let him. ]

And what is this?

[He lets him, handing it over to prove that he's fine and doesn't need any kind of tentacle heimlich, promise.]

I don't think I'll need medical care, really. It seems fine--it's some kind of jelly plant. They taste fine raw, which is good since they're pretty impervious to fire.

The texture might be a little funny, though.

[tentaculled]

Fufu... Sensei has lived in Japan for the past year. Funny seafood textures are nothing I can't handle! Oh, that fire-resistant property might be worth remembering for later, though.

[ he pops it into his mouth as soon as he's done speaking; hopefully, Sorey wasn't expecting it back. There's a few thoughtful hums as he chews it over... ]

Hmmm... Not bad! Not bad at all! [ don't talk with your mouth full korosensei. ]

[FOOD IS FOR EATING and Sorey is clearly fine with it.]

Kind of like pudding, right? Does Japan have a lot of seafood?

We'll definitely look into it outside the kitchen, though we're not really much good for testing it on our own...

[he quiets when Sorey asks his question. he certainly wants to hear more about Japan, too. a whole different country they've never heard of!]

Mmm! A lot like pudding! Sensei is so happy!! I thought I was going to go into sweets withdrawal down here. My tentacles would wither away...

[ he does seem quite happy about it, though, judging by the slightly pinkish hue his skin takes on. ]

Japan is a large island country, so yes, they have a lot of seafood! They even eat it raw - which sounds rather intimidating, but it's actually delicious.

[ despite his suffix-using, sensei is just a filthy gaijin... one who's gotten into the habit. ]

[Sorey automatically looks at Sensei's tentacles, curious as to whether or not they'll actually wither away from a lack of sweets. (He's human, that probably won't happen, he has to remind himself.)]

It makes sense that an island country would have a variety of ways to make seafood appetizing, though. I'd love to try and replicate some of it with the ingredients we have here. Do you have any recipes that might help us out?

Raw preparations would mean fewer kitchen accidents, on the whole...what would you pair raw seafood with, though? It sounds like it might pall if it's just on its own.

And what kind of sweets do you like, out of curiosity?

[Desserts are his specialty, though he's been feeling pretty hampered until -- well, until they started bringing in things like these plants, which didn't have a fishy flavor.]

Unfortunately, it's not my home country, so I'm hardly an expert on making their cuisine... But I might be able to whip something up. The raw fish dishes only really need rice, vinegar, and seaweed, after all.

[ "might be" is really probably, in this case - he turned random ingredients from the forest into five-star meals before, and his memory is impeccable. ]

-- As for my favorite sweets, though, I'll accept anything!! I've never eaten one I didn't like!

Mikleo makes the best desserts.

[Sorey why are you bragging about Mikleo's culinary skills.]

And I think any recipe would give us more variety in our meals than we've had so far.

H-hey, there's always room for improvement.

But, Sorey's right about the recipes.

Nyuoh! Mikleo-kun, you've been holding out on me!!

[ staring implicatingly in Mikleo's direction! Or... the direction he thinks Mikleo is in. He may be wrong. ]

... I can give you some of my recipes from Home Ec class, then. Although they'll have to be modified for undersea ingredients.

[imsorey]

[Sorey opens his mouth to ask what Home Ec is, but changes his mind halfway through the thought--he can put the pieces together enough to know it has to do with food. Context clues!!]

Everything here is probably going to be a little saltier no matter what you do to a recipe. And fishier. But as long as it tastes good that's fine!

[Mikleo 'sounds' like he's coming from right where Sorey's standing, as well as that can be pinpointed, so, you know. Korosensei can stare implicatingly at both of them.]

They teach that sort of thing in school too, huh...? I'm sure we can make them work! It's just a matter of rebalancing flavors.

That's right. Learning how to cook is an important part of becoming a respectable adult, too. I'm sure someone had to teach you two what you know. Right?

Of course! Everyone in the village sort of taught us what we needed to know when it came up. We read a lot of books, too, but cooking is definitely something that benefits from having a practical application.

[glancing off to his right, to where Mikleo is, to see if he has anything to add.]

...cooking was a bit of a hit or miss subject in Elysia; we all sort of learned that one as we went to feed Sorey.

[He's trying not to laugh, and it's audible. Clearly there were some shenanigans involved there.]

But for all the other subjects, either the adults took turns tutoring us, or brought in books from the human world so we could self-study. You're a teacher in Japan, you said... Is the schooling system very different?

[tentaculled]

W... Well, yes, it's quite different! It's very organized, and hundreds of children all come to a single school building to be taught different subjects by different teachers, and... Don't tell me your kind don't eat, Mikleo-kun?!

[ that's sort of what it sounded like?! they had to learn how to cook just to feed Sorey? That's too sad... ]

Do you have hundreds of students?!

[He opens his mouth to ask more, but holds himself back so that he doesn't interrupt Mikleo answering his question. Sorey could, technically, respond for him, but it's easier for Mikleo to explain seraphs himself.]
