closed mingle: welcome to amity island.
[ Kara has cleared out a landing site just outside the area of the ship Mimi was camped in. Each member of the party has been given a rough map marking the more thickly forested areas, contours marked for hills, and an arrow in the water indicating the general direction back to the underwater base. There are Xs for where the old shipwreck emerges through the green, but only those visible from the air, if you're on foot you're on your own. In Kon's handwriting, the maps are all labelled Amity Island in block letters. The wildlife is friendly unless provoked; we can't vouch for the plants. ]
[ The body itself is in a sturdy wood coffin resting on a bed of freshly dug earth, the lid can be easily pushed off. Time to get cracking. ]
[ ooc info about the island can be found here and here. any questions should be directed to the mods at the second link. ]

[It sounds like it's said mostly to himself as he approaches the coffin, taking a deep breath as if to steel his nerves. It's different than the island, not just because it's a stranger, but also that it's been sitting in humid air for... he doesn't know how long. That's not his kind of specialty.]
No blood, meaning... [He's still... talking to himself... moving around the coffin and the surrounding area, paying more attention to the ground and the campsite itself.]
The body wasn't found like this, was it? [That's directed to whoever might be around.] I mean... the ground looks like it was dug up pretty recently.
[Who disturbed the crime scene... he doesn't look too happy about that.
Alternatively, Hajime can be found muttering half-sentences to himself as he moves through the campsite, picking up items to examine as he goes. There might not be a Danganronpa-style class trial waiting for him, but it's become habit at this point.]

It's annoying isn't it? I assume the people who found it had planned to bury it or something. They might have changed their mind after starting. But it makes everything harder than it has to be.
[Because how were you suppose to examine everything properly when the body was moved and the ground disturbed? There were probably valuable clues just completely destroyed.]
It would probably be a good idea to talk to the ones who found all this and get their statement.

[Where did he come from?! Nagito being on the island isn't startling, considering they were all jammed on the same sub together, but him suddenly being behind him is. Though he really should expect this by now...]
Yeah, I agree. It was... Kara Zor-El and Kon-El, I think. If we can get a sense of what it looked like, it should be easier to put the pieces together. Which reminds me...
[Before anyone else starts fucking up the crime scene, he's just going to use his communicator to take some pictures of the campsite for Instaclam.]
no subject
[Really Hinata you should be used to this.]
I hope they have good memories. But, I doubt they really looked at anything.
[If they had no one would be here right now.]
By the way, have you followed the trails yet?
no subject
Not yet, no. I want to get a better idea of the situation here before I go too far outside it... I feel like there's still more to look at.
[He can't quite help but glance sideways at the other boy, though, fingers on his communicator.]
...Can I trust you to be on our side this time?
no subject
Good thinking. The more we know about the center of it all the more obvious clues elsewhere might be.
[He tilted his head slightly before Hinata spoke up again. He really was being doubted. Though, he understood why. Still, it hurt a little.]
I will always be on your side and the side of hope.
[Why did no one understand this?]
Or would you feel better if I were tied up somewhere else too? If that's something you want I don't really mind. You can do whatever makes you more comfortable.
no subject
[Since "siding with the killer's hope" meant that everyone who wasn't the killer would be executed.
Hajime's lips thin into an uncertain line; he really isn't sure whether or not he wants to believe Nagito. It's easier to just continue to be suspicious of him and his motivation and his hope than risk trusting him; it's probably safer, too.]
Tying you up isn't the answer. [Even if he thinks it's not a bad idea.] But if we do find that someone's killed the person here... are you going to play your stupid games to figure out whose hope is stronger?
no subject
[He was tired of the circular conversations. Why bring it up over and over? ]
And there's a different situation now. Why dwell on unpleasant things from the past when right now is very different? Though, to be here now we had to go through what we did, but in doing so it has brought us to this point. And this point will bring us to a better future. There is meaning to everything until this moment, and we will definitely find a bright hope on this path. So we should only focus on what good will happen next.
[Because they got through the darkness, right? So this was the good thing that comes next? It had to be. Or at least the path towards it.]
Are you planning to have a class trial with supposed killer?
[Because that's a sort of silly idea Hinata. Not that this was an answer to the question asked.]
no subject
[That much he can answer without any hesitation, his stomach turning at even the thought of another class trial. But his main fear since arriving here is that somehow, some way, Monokuma might appear and hurl them all right back into the hellish situation that they'd all managed to escape from.
But he's quiet, mulling over the rest of what the other boy had said, eventually frowning and shaking his head.]
The future, huh...?
[It is all they have right now. An unknown future on an alien planet.]
Fine. For now... let's focus on the investigation at hand.
no subject
[He seemed rather happy at that, to focus on the investigation. In fact he was really happy because he had missed doing these things. Not exactly the investigation itself, though solving puzzles was always fun. But the part where he got to look at this with Hinata.
Ah... but what if he was expected to go do stuff on his own instead? He had come over hoping they could look together.... Maybe he should ask? Or clarify? He was starting to feel a little unsure and nervous now.]
Can I join you?
no subject
[It slips out before he can stop it, a slightly bitter edge to his voice as he meets Nagito's eyes. He'd said they should just focus on the investigation, but... why did the other want to spend time with him? Nagito had made it pretty clear in the Funhouse what his true opinion of Hajime was, no matter what he'd said about loving his hope or whatever.
The constant jabs, the reminders of his Reserve Course status... it's not something he can get over so easily.]
no subject
[Ah, but this was what he had wanted, right? A wedge? But.... He didn't really want this either? Why wasn't there an easy solution to this? What should he do? What was the right answer? Why wasn't it easy?]
I just wanted to....
[It was probably impossible. But this was better. Right?]
Nevermind. I'm sorry to have suggested such a thing. Trash like me doesn't belong anywhere near you. It was silly to even suggest such a thing. Ah, how unfortunate. I'll just do what I can on my own. Maybe I'll be lucky and stumble on something no one else noticed.
Since that's all I'm good for.
no subject
[Rub it in his face about his lack of talent? Reemphasize that even someone like Nagito has some kind of talent. Maybe repeat some of the choice bits about how unfortunate it was to let a Reserve Course student show off.]
Make up your mind.
no subject
If anything, the failure redeemed them in a way. So now he just wanted to move on. But of course it wasn't that easy.
He was being greedy.
But, despite his own worries and concerns he should at least try a little. Because despite it all, he still wanted to be accepted. He still had to live with everyone, for the time being.]
Spend time with you.
no subject
At the time... Hajime didn't know whether or not that was the truth, or just another story Nagito made up to try to gain his sympathy. He still isn't sure, just like he isn't sure right now whether Nagito's just trying to use him for some yet-unknown purpose. Build up his hope just to take a more perverse pleasure in it when he can't live up to it.]
...Why?
[Can he trust Nagito? If this were a class trial, all the evidence would be pointing to the contrary. No matter what the other boy says, Hajime can't know what's truth and what's a lie. But he has to ask, just like he has to care. Because after all of this... Nagito is still his classmate. Sonia wanted them to work together. Chiaki...]
I don't have any great "talent." You're not going to get to see a greater "hope" from anything I do.
no subject
Of course... he knew there was more, but he was never going to share that.
What could he say? He lacked the words.]
And yet, despite that, you have always been good at these things. You have always solved the cases. You have always been reliable. Being near you is... relaxing.
no subject
[I had help. From Nanami, and from you.
Hajime's never felt like he's solved a case on his own. It was always a group effort with the rest of his classmates. Sometimes it felt like a struggle to try to see all the ways everything fit together, how they could use the evidence to find the truth. Even when they didn't want to learn the truth, they all kept pushing forward...
He exhales through his nose and jams his hands into his pockets, closing his eyes as if that might somehow help him figure out what to do here. Nagito had been so kind to him when they met; it had been hard to believe that he was capable of as much malice as he'd proven himself to be. Maybe there were still pieces of that person, the little things Hajime had glimpsed through their conversations that had seemed like small truths among all the lies.
He can't be sure of anything where Nagito is concerned. But he does know that... he's scared of what Nagito might do if he leaves him alone.
He opens his eyes.]
...Fine. Where do you think we should start?
no subject
I wasn't really sure since the body was disturbed it's hard to really use that as a starting point. But getting to know the island is definitely a good first step. Maybe even wandering around aimlessly, something might come up. A lucky encounter or something.
[ Of course he had already found some foot prints and other things. ]
Have you been to the campsite yet? There's also some kind of spaceship.
