subnautica | THE GRAND REEF ADVENTURE

[A fairly large group of heroes is making a foray into the Grand Reef now that the Reapers are gone. They're keeping an eye out for resources the base/Naoko could use but also questioning the fish; checking for signs of humans passing through; and also looking for the Emperor’s children, which the Reefbacks have pointed out might possibly be lurking in this area.

i. fishy findings

[Thanks to the combined efforts of the group, they’re able to get some information from the local fish. It’s a bit of a charades game for everyone (except Percy) but it becomes apparent that the Emperor’s children aren’t in the Grand Reef..or at least not the part they can access right now. But the fish seem more than happy to share some additional information about recent signs of humans and--well. Maybe they really do need a translator for some of this. Do you need some help communicating with the locals, or are you able to figure out what they’re so eager to talk about?

It looks like Fi is able to pick up signs of some natural magical hotspots here with her abilities, too, for those interested in that side of things.]

ii. hunt for humans

[The crew of the Degasi has left yet another abandoned base in this area, fill with supplies and information that could be of use. Their prizes this time are some audio logs, books, tacky sweaters, knives and other weapons, Reaper meat, and most importantly donuts. Additionally, locked inside of a desk is an odd object that might be worth investigating.

All of these finds aren’t going to make it back to the base all on their own, though, so it might be time for some good old fashioned looting. The Degasi crew’s illness and their run-ins with the Reapers might be worth discussing, too.]

It might be. We've gotten plenty of hints that things are troubled with the planet but haven't been able to pinpoint a whole lot of the definite causes. The more information we have about being able to communicate with it, the better, and you seem pretty uniquely suited among us for finding that out.

I've never really talked to a planet before, but if there are ocean gods or spirits or whatever hanging around that could help I can try to talk to them. The ocean itself...we'll have to figure out a way to interpret it.

When we get back, maybe we should start asking around to see what we can do from there. URSULA might have an idea for that, too.

URSULA is a little limited by not being able to really sense the magical or dream side of the planet, except in what physical affect it has on us. I wonder if that will change with her having her own body, though.

...do you want to try looking for the, er, planet's soul, at some point? We reached it once; we can probably reach it again and try harder to get a talk in. Last time we had no idea what we were dealing with, so we didn't really engage it in that way.

It's something. Sometimes things just need a vessel in order to sense stuff, my friend Rachel's kind of like that. She's hosting the Oracle now but before that she never understood what all of her visions meant. Maybe URSULA will be able to help then.

But uh. [Loaded question, Mikleo.] ...sure. Why not? How'd you guys come across it in the first place?

An oracle--? No, maybe you'd better tell me later.

Just, when we first started to enter the dreamscape when we slept, we wanted to figure out what was going on, right? And the two songs in the ocean, they could be heard pretty much everywhere in the dreamscape even then...we decided to try and find out what was singing. So one group of us found the Emperor, and one group of us found the planet's soul, only we didn't actually know what it was...we just met it, absorbed a little of it, and woke up. It's only recently the Emperor actually identified it for us.

Does that mean you're carrying part of the planet with you?

[Absorbing a planet's soul kind of sounds bad, bro.]

At least the Emperor knew. Did...I mean, the Emperor didn't think there was anything really wrong with it, right?

I mean, she says it's confused? I don't know how bad a planet has to be to get confused. Said it marked us, too, so maybe it trusts us...?

[he laughs, a little sheepish, like he picked up on that]

It's worrying, since the Void Song has bad effects and it's what led us to the soul, but it hasn't had any ill effects on us so far, somehow.

It depends on what's controlling the planet. Annabeth and I and our friends fought against the earth goddess a little while ago. She was making the planet a mess. I don't know if marking is a good sign though...

What kind of bad effects are we talking about exactly?

Nightmares, dream corruption. Violence in the sea life. Not great.

You guys fought an earth goddess?

Sounds like a blast.

But yeah. We're demigods, it's sort of a really long story but when Gaea started rising up we had to stop her from wrecking civilization and everything. That's one of the last things I remember about home.

Sounds like its own sort of blast. Seems like a bunch of us here got whisked away in the middle of pressing business.

Gaea's done for. We defeated her before I ended up here, but we'll see how long things stay quiet at home.

...you and Sorey, too?

We were kind of in the middle of gearing up to go fight the Lord of Calamity. Long story, but basically things are getting ruined pretty badly by war and malevolence back home, and a lot of the root causes go back to that guy.

...this whole Iniidae thing kind of felt like a vacation at first, but it's wound up getting just as big over the past several months, I guess.

I'm familiar with that kind of story. Gaea, Kronos...it's the same story with different players.

Annabeth and I thought Iniidae was a vacation at first, too, but now it's almost as confusing as home. But you guys have been here for a while haven't you? We've made some progress.

Yeah, it's not uncommon. Sorry to hear you've been through trouble too, though. I guess every world's got it's rough spots.

...would you believe we've been in Iniidae longer at this point than we've been traveling out of our home village in our own world? That's always so weird to think about.

I think that's a safe thing to assume.

And I'd believe it, but that's also just raising a bunch of questions like how and why that's possible. Neither of you have ever been able to go back or anything?

Never ever. We've seen people come and go -- even a friend from home -- but we've never experienced it ourselves. It's...well, we're still trying to find them, but we also try not to think about it too hard when we're not busy.
