SETTLING IN (OPEN MINGLE - JULY 1-7 PERIOD)

It's a much bigger group that trickles in to the home base from the monolith, by Seamoth or Seaglide, by magic or tech or just pure swimming power. Some of them are supporting the less aquatically-inclined newbies; some are in dire need of a rest from fighting that Reaper. Fortunately, with all the expansions and additions people made in June, the base isn't bursting at the seams quite yet, but fifty-odd people still makes for quite a crowd...

(VERY LOOSE) PROMPTS:

I. the spirit of discovery
[Newbies, there's so much to do! So much to see! Some of you brought your own things, but you'll also be getting your gear and your nanite modifications at the base, including the handy-dandy telepathy older crew have been demonstrating. There's tech everywhere; experiments and constructs in progress in the lab; a modest library to browse; aquariums of fishy friends; URSULA to meet; perhaps a couple of her helpful drones roving about if you wanted to futz with them. There's the sealife of the Safe Shallows to see (so much less threatening than a Reaper!), either on your way in, or if you sneak out later, or from safely behind glass in the observatory. There's the horrendous discovery that there are now several dozen people in this place, and one single toilet.

Older crew, there's plenty for you too! Are you showing newbies around? Maybe taking a couple to the med bay to rest up, since they came out of that dream business in pretty rough shape? Finding someplace to tuck yourself away after all the excitement, or launching yourself out the nearest hatch to get away from the increased crowd? Maybe some of you recognize each other, and are comparing what you last remember before coming here...]

II. domestic b...liss...?
[A bit later on, with everyone more or less in one place and one piece, maybe it's time to get a bit more organized, or play around a little with what's becoming more familiar. Perhaps it's time for round-robin introductions? Maybe you want to hold cooking lessons and get new people familiarized with what they can eat here. Or swimming lessons so folks can get around more easily. Or, if you're more mechanically-minded, it might be time to consult people and figure out some further expansions and accommodations -- though don't forget that hurricane season is coming. Maybe it's just time to built a giant fort out of all these air mattresses and have the mother of all underwater sleepovers. Your call!]

III. where the wild things are
[For new crew, the Void Song and the ocean still have a powerful pull. The dreamscape appears to still be open for this week, as well.

Do you give in to those strange, sleepy, oceanic impulses and head back out into the water, swimming to who knows where? Are you an older crew member trying to keep newbies from doing that? Maybe one of you sang the Void Song to someone to wake them, and have noticed the effects...]

IV. wildcard
[Have something else in mind? Go for it!]

URSULA has large media archives. Me and Roxy just finished cleaning them up. You should be able to ask her for most things. [Even Nic Cage movies... Jake why did you make him put them back... why...

There's the suggestion of eyebrows lifted up beyond the edge of the shades, but otherwise Dirk's expression doesn't change, and those brows settle down. He's teaching Dave already, so... why not?]

Sure.

[Good job learning Guns and Robots, Hinata!]

Ah, I met Roxy back on the Monolith. She seems... really nice.

[Held his hand and ran around to help him look for his classmates? A good.

But while Dirk's expression doesn't change, Hajime's slightly-wary, questioning frown eases into a smile, and he nods.]

Thanks, Dirk. The more people who know how to... make sure the base keeps running, the more time we'll have to investigate the mystery. Right?

She is one of the kindest, most genuine and loving people I know.

[Sorry pal Dirk is always the Roxy Lalonde Love Hour, and he feels the need to let Hinata know that Roxy is indeed Good People and worth friendship.

At least Hinata is smiling a little? That's good.]

Right. [Or in case Dirk disappears, is what he has opted not to add.] It isn't hard to pick up, and URSULA and her drones are always willing to help. You should be able to do most projects you want to with a little guidance and learning.

Aah, is that so? I'll have to get to know her better. I still have a lot of people I have to introduce myself to, here...

[Good to know his impression of her wasn't totally wrong. Ugh, self-introductions, though. Things he's never really liked doing.]

But yeah, I'd... like to learn whatever I can.

[That smile fades at the mention of drones, though, and again he looks toward his knees as if trying to figure out what to say.]

Good to know.

[Is Hinata not comfortable with drones? Maybe if he isn't familiar with that kind of tech. Although he did ask about AI earlier. That suggests some kind of familiarity. Perhaps not positive familiarity.]

I've taken a personal interest in URSULA's code and modified the programming on the drones myself. You don't have to worry about them. The drones make a few mistakes based on limited understanding and resources when processing requests about home, but they're programmed to do their best and learn as they go.

[There's a potential for danger: Dirk has seen that in the most irreversible objectives. Protect humanity, make the planet suitable for colonization. URSULA could not fight those commands if she wanted to, might even have a psychological breakdown if she tried. But Dirk has chosen not to ever talk about those issues on-base, where URSULA could hear. Besides that, he genuinely believes that URSULA genuinely cares for this crew. He has seen enough of her behaviour to believe that if those objectives were not impossible for her to defy, she would put her crew above all else.]

[personal profile] hopefragment 2016-07-22 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
You say that, but...

[Something could happen. Someone could hijack the drones' programming. URSULA's programming, even? He doesn't know anything how that kind of thing could be possible, but... he doesn't know how else to explain what happened on the island. How it went from a peaceful class trip to an island fraught with murder.

His fingers clench around the handbook in his lap, then he just shakes his head and exhales a sigh. No. Panicking at this point isn't going to accomplish anything.]

You're right, sorry. Like I said... this is a lot for me to get used to.

[That doesn't seem wholly true. Hinata isn't talking from Loki's bizarre paranoia about robot overlords. He seems to be speaking in another way.]

You're right. It's possible something could go wrong. Me and Roxy are doing what we can to prevent it, but it isn't a waste to consider contingencies.

...What kind of failsafes do you guys have in mind? If... you don't mind me asking.

[Since apparently we're going to talk about this anyway.]

I don't know anything about code, like I said, but... is there anything to stop something from... I don't know, overwriting the drones' programming?

[It's a specific concern, but it isn't an invalid one. Dirk doesn't mind answering.]

There are three potential points of access. URSULA's servers are safely located elsewhere. It's the most dangerous point if security is breached there, but it's also likely the most safe place already. Someone could access her code and interfere with the drones' programming from within the system. I already asked URSULA not to give administrative access to anyone but me and Roxy. Superficial changes are possible, but URSULA herself is advanced enough to lock most out.

The easiest access point would be through the wireless connection between the drones. URSULA could probably defend herself from corruption, but I wouldn't be surprised if a drone could be hijacked that way. [He did... basically hijack Wiz and give it a small personality, after all.]

Increased security is possible at every point. The best security is a killswitch for the drones and a safely stored, totally isolated back-up for URSULA. But URSULA isn't just a harddrive; she's a learning, sentient AI. She'll keep developing. It would be inefficient to constantly back her up and move that to a secure location, and it would be insecure and defeating the purpose to have her continuously updating her back-up.

[personal profile] hopefragment 2016-07-22 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Mm.

[He stays quiet while Dirk speaks, only humming every now and again at the appropriate points to indicate that he's listening. It sounds to him like URSULA is pretty well defended, but, well... he honestly wasn't as worried about the AI herself. He's still incredibly suspicious and wary of her, but something like an AI is too advanced, too outside the realm of his imagining to really get a solid handle on how to stop something like that from, say, deciding to lock down the base and run a killing game.

Drones, on the other hand...? That sounds like robots, and robots sound like Monokuma and his "Monobeasts."]

...Then a killswitch for the drones seems like a good place to start...

[--Though again, it sounds like he's more talking to himself than to Dirk for that particular statement. Then almost immediately he seems to realize he's said something strange, and glances toward Dirk again, a little sheepish.]

Not that I don't believe you when you say you and Roxy are the only ones with administrative access, but... better to be safe, right?
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (a useless piece of shit all day)

[personal profile] splinten 2016-07-23 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Likely so. It's something I'd want to talk to URSULA about first.

[He imagines she can be listening in on this conversation right now but who knows. Either way, it's what he thinks.]

The drones are her method of interacting with the outside world. It'd be rude to install a killswitch on 'em without talking to her about it.
hopefragment: logic diiiiiiiiiiiive (hmmm*)

[personal profile] hopefragment 2016-07-23 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
...Of course.

[But then he just looks uncomfortable again, because if URSULA knows about it -- as he assumes she must be able to hear, even without gaudy, obvious monitors and cameras -- then it's possible that anything that might get into her systems would be able to overwrite it, as well.

...This is all making his head spin. He groans quietly and presses his fingertips to his forehead, as if trying to mentally hold a thought in place.]

But you're right. For now we should focus on... exploration and securing the base. If we're going to live here, we have to do what we can.

[Did he give Hinata a headache. He is pretty sure he gave Hinata a headache. He was just stating the facts as he knew them, but poor Hinata has had to suffer the consequences.]

It's for the best with a hurricane upcoming.

[beat. should he push it? He doesn't want to push it. At the same time, Hinata has not been subtle. He may as well note.]

It's easier to design a system that defends against a specific enemy than all possibilities.
hopefragment: until he wanted us to stand ON him (he seemed like such a stand-up guy*)

[personal profile] hopefragment 2016-07-23 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[So many things have been giving Hajime headaches recently. He really should ease up on the questions that he doesn't want the answers to.

He's quiet again when Dirk mentions a "specific enemy," that muscle in his jaw tightening again. It's obvious he has one in mind.]

...I just... don't want to see anyone get hurt. That's all, [he answers quietly, staring down at his knees.]
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (and the night before christmas........)

[personal profile] splinten 2016-07-24 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
[So Hinata definitely doesn't want to drop the details. Dirk isn't going to push at it. He doesn't see any point.]

You're not exactly alone in that sentiment. Me and my family are going to do what we can to keep this place and the people in it as safe as we can.

[Karkat doesn't need to go back to being in DR: Meteor Edition.]
hopefragment: (side glance)

[personal profile] hopefragment 2016-07-24 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Maybe someday Hajime can regale him with the tales of schoolkids being forced to kill each other. But so soon after arrival in a strange place just makes him too leery to share the details, too wary of standing out and getting attention for something so blatantly out of the ordinary.

Someday he'll want to talk about it. He has to. But while Dirk may or may not be the right person, now is definitely not the right time.]

I'm glad to hear that. And if there's anything I can do to help... don't hesitate to ask. Please.
