The Aurora Explosion

URSULA's voice crackles on over all forms of communication, radio and telepathic. In both, her transmission seems unstable. "Warning. Urgent. Attention required. I really mean it. Please evacuate the water. If impossible, hide immediately. The blast will be incoming from the east. The Aurora has reached critical status. Dark Matter engines failing. Core system failure impending, counting down in ten... nine... eight... sev-- sev-- five... four... three... tw--"

The explosion is felt everywhere.

Should any be above the surface in the line of sight of the Aurora, they will witness the fires of explosion. The outer shell pops and bursts into flame, billowing out, a deafening roar that cracks with a heavy wave buoying through the water. Shocks of steam fill the air, scalding what surfaces they burst over. A rain begins.

In some ways, it is the safest place to witness.

Below, the explosion ricochets. A shock blasts through the water, then another, sending wave after wave pushing seaweed flat down, knocking animals about, scattering and rocking sand. Pulses of burning hot bubbles shake through a radius, fizzling out only after it sears and disperses to ravage what rises above. Cold water filaments web through the pods of heat. The ocean shudders.

Even as far as the base, the Aurora’s explosion makes itself known. The whole structure shudders on its supports, loose items shaking and falling, rushes of white and dark water bursting past the observatory windows in one wave, another, a third, and in one empty observatory, a crack breaks through the glass, forcing URSULA to seal off the area temporarily.

Rain still falls above the Aurora’s wreckage. The last of the fires will be doused. When the waters become cool again, new sea life will move in to make food of the their dead brethren.

A strange keening shivers in the air at the edge of hearing.

[He'll just wave an impatient hand at him without raising his face from the table; go already.]

[Without anymore fuss he ducks out of the room in search of disinfectant, also taking the opportunity to do a proper headcount of who's inside. It doesn't look like anyone's missing, and he comes back with his bundle of first aid supplies and a clearer expression.]

[Mikleo's progressed to sitting up properly by the time he's back, though he's still keeping firmly off his feet; his own expression lightens a little when he sees Sorey's.]

All right?

[imsorey]

Yeah. It looks like everybody made it back, as far as I can tell. That means everyone probably heard the warning in time.

[He takes a seat and sets his stuff on the table, digging through to find the disinfectant.]

You feeling better?

A bit. The water's calming down more.

[imsorey]

[Pulling a healing gel out and setting it in front of Mikleo as he gets to work on cleaning up the cuts.]

I don't know if that'll help with a headache, but hold onto it just in case.

...we should save these, you know...

[But he does take it.]

There's no point in having them if they're never used either. I've still got some left anyways.

[under his breath]

Kelp gels?

[Pulling a face when he hears that last bit]

Those probably wouldn't taste very good.

Better than fish gels, probably.

[...pulls a face too...why did he start talking about fish gels when his stomach hasn't settled yet. That was dumb.]

[Snickering when he sees Mikleo's matching expression.]

But about just as smelly. I don't think it helps when both of them would make you feel like you want to throw up.

...we're not really going to get anywhere either way until we find a substitute for gel bases. I didn't have much on me when we came here...

[puts his face back down on the table; the cool metallic surface against his forehead makes him feel better.]

I'm sure there's plenty to work with as long as you know where to look.

[He mulls over their explorations in the past few days as he finishes cleaning up the cuts and starts idly rearranging the haphazard pile of medical supplies into neat clusters.]

There were some jelly plants that might work as long as we wash the ocean water off of them.

Were there? Good catch...

[Maybe it's time to start paying more attention to the plants, period, or he's going to fall behind in their unofficial observing-things contest.]

I pretty much picked up anything that looked like it might be useful, so there was some trial and error.

[But he's beaming, because praise from Mikleo is never a bad thing]

[It was a moment of weakness. Sometimes, when your head's rattled too hard, things that don't make sense slip out. It doesn't count!]

More error than trial, I'm guessing.

[Sorry his praise is so short-lived, Sorey.]

[He'll take what he can get]

Hey, not as much as you think! There's not a ton of variety in this area, just a lot quantity-wise. Not a lot to get wrong when there's only a few plants and animals.

Sure thing. Make sure you're not feeling sea-sick first.

[He knows Mikleo wouldn't do anything strenuous if he wasn't feeling better, but he has to say it anyways.]
