URSULA's voice crackles on over all forms of communication, radio and telepathic. In both, her transmission seems unstable. "Warning. Urgent. Attention required. I really mean it. Please evacuate the water. If impossible, hide immediately. The blast will be incoming from the east. The Aurora has reached critical status. Dark Matter engines failing. Core system failure impending, counting down in ten... nine... eight... sev-- sev-- five... four... three... tw--"
Should any be above the surface in the line of sight of the Aurora, they will witness the fires of explosion. The outer shell pops and bursts into flame, billowing out, a deafening roar that cracks with a heavy wave buoying through the water. Shocks of steam fill the air, scalding what surfaces they burst over. A rain begins.
In some ways, it is the safest place to witness.
Below, the explosion ricochets. A shock blasts through the water, then another, sending wave after wave pushing seaweed flat down, knocking animals about, scattering and rocking sand. Pulses of burning hot bubbles shake through a radius, fizzling out only after it sears and disperses to ravage what rises above. Cold water filaments web through the pods of heat. The ocean shudders.
Even as far as the base, the Aurora’s explosion makes itself known. The whole structure shudders on its supports, loose items shaking and falling, rushes of white and dark water bursting past the observatory windows in one wave, another, a third, and in one empty observatory, a crack breaks through the glass, forcing URSULA to seal off the area temporarily.
Rain still falls above the Aurora’s wreckage. The last of the fires will be doused. When the waters become cool again, new sea life will move in to make food of the their dead brethren.
A strange keening shivers in the air at the edge of hearing.
[As a note, direct any questions regarding this event to the March OOC Post! And a special note for Korosensei, go for it ♥]
[ nothing weird about holding tentacles with your teacher, okay... ]
Hm? Didn't I tell you? [ apparently not. Well, it's only a matter of time before absolutely everyone knows he's a teacher, whether they like it or not, given how much he likes to talk about teaching. And his kids. ] Yes, I am a teacher! The teacher of a very special class, as it so happens, which is precisely why we went to another planet. Surely you didn't think a sensei like me could be just an average teacher?
[ although he'd be flattered if he did. As he speaks, he looks over the controls, fingers sliding over the dashboard and wheel.
The obvious question has been on his mind for weeks, too. If Mikleo's afraid of the answer, then Korosensei is terrified. ]
Well -- I didn't think about you being a teacher at all until about five seconds ago, but -- I suppose that makes sense. i've never met one from, ah, a formalized school. With me and Sorey all the other villagers more or less pitched in; we didn't have a class class or anything.
[SKIRT THE AWKWARD SUBJECT SKIRT THE AWKWARD SUBJECT. He's also watching Korosensei work; he really has no idea how to pilot one of those things, but maybe observation will clear the mystery up a bit.]
You two must have been from quite the rural town, then. That kind of intimate learning environment can be a good thing, too, though. I have respect for all my fellow teachers.
[ in truth, he's never piloted anything like this before, either. But he's got the devil's intuition and learns things very quickly. Based on what he knows about how other vehicles control - helicopters, boats, cars, things he's used or learned how to use over the course of his stormy life - he can make an educated guess on how this one works. It's only a matter of seconds before the Seamoth whirs to life. ]
It was a little village up in the mountains, so it was a bit--whoaaaaaaa--
[Now it's his turn to lean back and clutch at the seat. He's never even been in a wagon, let alone a moving technological vehicle like this, and it is an Experience. He's trying to keep his voice calm, but he still can't help but blurt:]
Nurufufu! For your information, sensei is a great driver!! There's no need to fear!
[ although he may be a bit of a speed demon. especially when there are no lights or traffic regulations to stop him... the Seamoth zips backwards out of the doors and into the open ocean. After that, all it takes is a few more strategic lever-tugs to get it turned around and pointing in the right direction... At which point, he puts the proverbial pedal to the metal.
Not that it goes very fast - it's an underwater vehicle - but damned if he isn't trying. ]
[there's still a definite mental aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa for a little bit, before Mikleo finally calms down, lulled by their not actually crashing into anything and the feeling of water rushing around the Seamoth, and starts looking out the windows.]
[ he's not talking about you, Korosensei... regardless, they're out in the open ocean now. He has to admit that the view is wonderful, even if he can't fully appreciate it normally - there's a certainy beauty to this underwater world. ]
Mikleo-kun, is this your first time riding in something like this?
Yes! We don't have any vehicles like this at home, and -- well, we walk everywhere, really, there's not a whole lot of transport unless you hitch a ride with a caravan. Sorey and I have never been in the ocean before coming to Iniidae either, though we got a look at it a couple of times.
[his alarm's subsided -- he just sounds enthused now.]
[ people really are from different worlds here. He's not sure what to make of it yet. It's fascinating - thrilling - and the implications a little bit unsettling. He could be much farther from his students than he even thought possible. ]
I see! In that case, I'm happy to share this exciting first-time experience with you. Automatic vehicles are an amazing feat of human intelligence and craftsmanship. [ although this one wasn't built exclusively by humans... details. ] So, you and Sorey-kun had never seen the ocean before? You said you grew up in a little village in the mountains.
Yes -- it's a small community of seraphim. Sorey was the only human there for a long time...things got pretty complicated, and he left to help a friend out. I wound up going with him, to help him get around the human world. Maybe there aren't automatic vehicles there, but we certainly saw some amazing things.
[he makes a rueful little noise]
Of course, we also got caught up in a lot more than we bargained for. Our grandfather knew we'd go sometime, but I bet he's worried.
Just Hyland -- that's the country where Elysia's in -- and Rolance, the one next to it. We'd like to go further someday, but there's not really a way to leave the continent of Glenwood...we shouldn't, anyway.
[no sailing technology AND an unholy nemesis sort of put a damper on that sort of thing.]
...I don't have the Celestial Record on me, but Sorey does. It's a book of maps and historical sites and things -- ask him to show it to you sometime.
[ "they shouldn't?" what an odd turn of phrase. Though he can't see him, Korosensei glances to the 'empty' seat beside him briefly. ]
Oh, yes! I would very much like that. Learning about all of these new places and cultures has been very exciting for a teacher like me. It's important that I stay on top of everything in a situation like this, too.
[ so he doesn't get surprise assassinated, obviously. although it's looking less and less likely. ]
[IT'S...COMPLICATED...and it's also a mildly bitter subject if Mikleo goes into it too much on his own, so he gently avoids going into details for now.
He does tip his head back against the seat for a moment at Korosensei's statements, closing his eyes.]
Thank you, by the way. I think we'd be in a lot of trouble right now if you weren't willing to do that.
If they expected to come here at all, you mean...? Though it's true, I don't think anyone expected radiation explosions and enormous egg-laying sand sharks. Or robots.
[He takes advantage of being invisible to rub at his face. It's an obviously tired sort of gesture; he doesn't make it where people can see.]
Sorey and I weren't recruited or called here, as far as we know. We don't know how we got here, though Milla mentioned something about fractured and alternate worlds, and there's plenty of strange magic in Glenwood, so we may have stumbled into some of that. We're willing to help out to make a livable space for humans here, but if we can't find clues as to a way back home for too much longer -- it's a worrisome situation.
[ this isn't the first time he's heard about it, but it's the first time he's heard it directly from someone. If it wasn't already obvious, there's something fishy about the entire situation; even Korosensei isn't sure what to make of it at the moment. Different worlds - different universes, maybe, places he would never have reasonably assumed to exist - converging together here, by their own will or against it. ]
That is worrisome indeed. [ he sighs through his nose(?), thinking. ] In that case, it's even more important that we get to the bottom of this. I won't stand by while kind people like you and Sorey-kun are held hostage so far from their homes.
You never know. We might stumble on some clues in the Aurora itself. It's a big ocean, but there's only the one mysterious crashed ship, so I'm hopeful.
[He's not always the best at injecting notes of optimism or lifting the mood, but he does his best in that little telepathic statement.]
That's right! Maybe we could get that ship working again eventually and bring everyone back home! I've never flown a spaceship before, but it can't be that different from driving something like this, right?
