[So what are you up to as we pass out of the first hectic week of September and into the second? Calm strolls with alien elephants or fast swims with alien sealife? Flashing your sunglasses at crime scenes? Dreaming and building dreams? Waking and building...buildings? There's always a lot to do here, whether it's formal missions or just shenanigans with friends.

They're a lot friendlier than last time. Guess it's worth putting food down here from them, even if getting it to them without entering the caves is a bother.

They said humans went beyond the lava, and that's a good swim further in, so chances we find something interesting are high. They said there'd be crystals too. Let's go?

Let's go. [Korra replies, determined, as she swims in.]

So what are the crystals supposed to be for? I've been reading the info everyone collected in our devices, but I don't remember seeing anything about those.

[he sighs as they dive forward and down, past the traces of the base; he's not the most certain about them himself]

I told Karkat I'd check for those for him. Apparently they're needed for some kind of...mega cannon? Not sure we should be building those in particular, but it's always nice to know where the resources are.

[She trails along at his side, making note of any interesting landmarks they pass.]

A cannon? [A lick of confusion crosses the telepathic bond from her side.] Are they making the cannon out of crystals or something?

[he's looking around sharply too; they'll need the landmarks to go back, and it's getting darker and deeper. A Boxing Snail shakes its claws irritably at them as they pass.]

I don't think so, since it didn't sound like they needed a lot. Probably a power source? Or a way to focus it?

Huh. Well if we find any down there, we can always come back for them when we're awake.

[She barely refrains from sticking her tongue out at the Boxing Snail--it's probably not the impression she wants to give the rest of the sea creatures anyway.]

Actually... can we come back down here with the subs?

Yeah, though we'd better check with Donatello and the other techs. I'm sure the subs can go far deeper than non-dreaming swimmers can -- even a Seamoth will still work at this depth for a while -- but I'm not sure what their hard limit is.

I don't think we're able to bring things back this way, though, so we'll have to give it a try sometime.

It's too bad we can't bring anything back with us. It's way easier to travel through the water this way. At least we'll--hopefully--have some information to bring to those techs after this trip.

[There's movement from the corner of her eye, and Korra turns her head toward whatever creature is lurking there.]

So...on a scale of reefback to reaper, how friendly do you think the local sealife is down here?

[he follows her gaze and swallows, lowering his staff to aim at it -- a fight reflex, though he doesn't fire anything off. even by Iniidae ocean standards, that thing is unsettling as hell.]

The Crabsnakes and Boxing Snails are kind of grumpy. I've never seen one of those before, but it's not like we can be hurt right now...should we check it out?

Can't hurt to try approaching it. I mean, it probably knows more about this place than we do.

[Korra begins swimming down toward the creature, hoping that it would be less grumpy than the two that Mikleo's already mentioned. When she's gotten a bit closer, she calls out to it.]

Hey, there! Do you think you could help us with something?

[he kicks down as well, keeping at her side and sending it his own telepathic greeting, a wordless beacon of friendly intent. the tentacle thing swivels to face them (well, presumably; it doesn't really seem to have much of a face of its own) and raises some of its limbs.

it responds with a burst of foul language; that pulls Mikleo, at least, up short for a second.]

Uh--what?

[The cursing makes Korra pause, too, though she recovers enough to frown down at the thing--whatever it is.]

Well, that's rude. What did we ever do to you?

[The creature just responds with more vulgar language, and then, suddenly, it darts up toward them, mouth opened wide like it wants to take a bite right out of them. Korra hastily sends a jet of water at it, making it recoil and retreat.]

I get the feeling these things aren't too friendly. [Her mental voice is a touch dry when it reaches Mikleo.]

Yeah, wow, that's ruder than usual. Some of them are aggressive, but I've never heard one swear before.

[that disturbs him, actually; he transmits a picture over to her, a humanoid with octopus tentacles having replaced the face, something from memory]

You don't think they could be related--?

[She frowns down at the creature again, comparing it to the one in the image Mikleo sent her.]

They've both got the tentacle thing going on. Maybe? Is this something from your world?

No. Please no. It's something D.va and her friend found a photo of in the Monolith, the big building with all the sleep pods. And we found sketches in a base before of tentacles exploding out of a man's face...I mean, maybe that's a common alien thing? But really...

[There's a jolt of surprise and a little bit of disgust filtering through the mental connection this time.]

Exploding out of someone's face? Ouch. And also, really gross.

[Korra's eyes try to pinpoint the tentacle-thing's location in the darkness, but gives up after a second. She looks at Mikleo again.]

Think we should we try to contact it again, or keep going?

[he stares in its general direction, then shakes his head, reinforcing it with a little burst of returned feeling; disinclination to chase it, and a sort of inarticulate apology for the disgust]

We'd better keep going. We can always come back and check out our weird tentacle mystery another time -- or on our way back, possibly.

[if they can't find anything below the vents, then why not check out this other new mystery?]
