09/28 network video

[ there is a teenage girl with just. way, way too much hair. way too much hair. she looks nervously excited, and waves at the communicator once. so does the chameleon on her shoulder. ]

Um, hi! I'm new? I mean, that's not a question, I'm new, and! I was wondering if anyone is really good at braiding hair? I kinda can't do it all on my own. Or not...quickly? And it's, um, there are so many little passages and stuff around here it's kind of a pain to just leave it down soooooooo. I can cook you something in exchange?

[ a beat. ]

Oh! I forgot. I'm Rapunzel? That's. Also not a question oh my gosh I can't do this anyway even if you can't braid I'm in the kitchen? Making cake and cookies? If you want any? It's kiiiiiind of a holiday for me. A little bit. It's my birthday! So. If you want to drop by that'd be great! If not, that's. Also great? Yeah!! So I should just. Turn...this off now.

09/28 base kitchen

[ like she said, rapunzel can pretty much be found in the kitchen all day, just. reorganizing stuff (no one seems to mind? it should be okay?) and chopping and drying the spices magnus chase found like in the tdm and also just. baking cake. lots of cake. and cookies. they have eggs and she can make a ton of shit from scratch okay she's got this even if it's mostly fruit flavored cakes but hey we have cocoa so. she can do chocolate stuff?

she's also probably singing or humming to herself and she'll jump just, super high whenever anyone comes in. ]

Oh! Oh, uh, sorry, you scared me! Not that you're scary. I mean, unless you want to be scary? I'm not sure why someone would want to be scary - er, anyway, hi! Did you want something to eat? I have...lots.

09/27 | locked to korra

[ the last thing she remembers is the ugly duckling and the tunnels underneath, and rapunzel can't recall when she fell asleep. but she must have, because she wakes up on a...mountain. so. that's a thing. she also has to spend some time negotiating with the birdogs who tried to make a nest of her hair, but luckily her disney princess powers make her super great with animals. so that's not actually that difficult.

the mountain climbing is also...well, it's more difficult than befriending birdogs, but they kind of lead her down and so she follows along, all her hair bundled up in her arms, although she's probably getting cuts on her feet and legs and yeah this is just. all around a dumb thing.

she has no idea where she is. at all. but she's tired and confused and no one is there to stop her when rapunzel huffs and flops to the ground, her hair spilling out of her arms. ]

Oooooh. I don't know if we should keep wandering around, Pascal. Maybe we should wait for night time? I could at least get us oriented from the stars, then. But...that's pretty far away?

[ help her??????? help her. korra, you're her only hope. she's talking to her chameleon who has no ideas, either. ]

But I didn't see anything familiar from up there - how's that possible?

[ she's mumbling again. ]

[Korra can't quite hold back the snort of laughter. Okay, and she thought she was a bad liar.]

I'm Korra. And this is Floater Island. I can show you the map, but... [She crosses her arms over her chest.] How did you even get here if you don't know where this is?

[ well, she might notice with all the fiddling rapunzel is doing she doesn't have a communicator on either wrist... ]

Um, that's the thing! I don't...know. [ but she's totally fine ] I maaaaay have fallen asleep? I guess? And then I woke up...here.

[ it sounds crazy, and rapunzel knows it... ]

[Oh, she's noticing the lack of device now that Rapunzel's confirmed her suspicions.]

You're new--really new. You haven't even been to the base yet. [She realizes this immediately.] This...might take a while to explain.

I have time? I mean...some time! I think. Er, I have to be somewhere tonight? You know, for the lanterns...

[ about that, rapunzel. ]

[By the time Rapunzel's done talking, Korra's already wincing.]

Actually...if you had plans, you'll probably have to skip them. There's a lot more people like us back at the base. We're all stuck here until we figure out how to leave.

But...the lanterns happen tomorrow!

[ oh no? oh no. and also ]

Oh no - oh nooooo. Mother's going to realize I'm gone!

[ hahaha she's fucked]

Well. The good news is, that might not happen? Apparently time's kind of wonky here and timelines aren't matching up. So your mom might not even know that you're gone back home.

What kind of lanterns are we talking about here?

Oh. [ she deflates, not sure if that's...good? or bad? it's also. very confusing. but okay. ]

Um. The thing is, every year on my birthday, there are lots of floating lanterns let out at the capital - I thought they were lights, but Flynn says they were lanterns, and I was finally going to go see them but then -

[ she woke up here? ]

I...guess I need to wait for next year?

[Putting a hand on Rapunzel's shoulder, Korra offers her a slight smile.]

You know what I said about the timelines not matching? There's a chance that you can still catch them whenever you return home. I don't know how all this works, but people have been here way longer than me, and they seem to believe it.

If you don't want to wait, maybe we can make some lanterns here--you know, just to tide you over until you see the real ones.

[ oh no? oh no. korra seems so sure of herself, rapunzel can't help but perk up a little...even if she's still a little upset about > strange world > missing the lanterns > not knowing where flynn is or how mother will be. ]

I - make them? Could we really? It was, you know, all I wanted for my birthday, so - oh, I'm so sorry, I'm being so rude? I'm Rapunzel! I'm so bad at this, drat.

[She laughs now.]

Definitely. It might not be exactly like what you have back home, but I'm sure we can at least try to make something for you. Especially if it's your birthday.

Besides, you don't need to apologize. Trust me, everyone else was just as confused as you are right now when they first got here. I should know; I just got here a few weeks ago.

It is! I'll be eighteen? I mean, tomorrow. Er. Today? I'm actually not sure how long I slept...I'll...go with tomorrow?

[ a nervous laugh as pascal pats her neck reassuringly. ]

Um! But, you seem so confident? Just...wow! [ vague hand gestures, when will she stop the fidgeting n e v e r ] Like you know exactly what's happening!

[Korra laughs again, one hand on the back of her neck.]

I really don't. There's so many mysteries in this place, it's just a whole lot of guessing. And, well. I guess I seem confident because I'm just used to a bunch of crazy stuff happening. Can't stand around panicking when people need help and all that.

Oh! But...

[ she fiddles with her hair again, but it's at least seeming less...scared nervous? ]

Er, isn't that hard? I mean. You should be able to panic sometimes, too, right??? Er, you can panic to me sometime. If you ever want. I mean, if you need to!

I'm supposed to be a leader back home--someone people look to for help. I don't really have a choice about not panicking, you know? Even if it is hard.

[Korra smiles at her warmly.] That's really sweet of you, though. Now...you probably have a bunch of questions. I'll try my best to answer them.

Well, maybe so, but! I think...well, I know it can be hard not having anyone to talk to. [ pascal looks offended for a second here ] Oh! Not that I didn't, I mean, I had you, Pascal, of course, but just. It's an offer that exists!

[ rapunzel clasps her hands together in front of herself, humming in thought. ]

Ummm...oh! Er. What is this place?

[Rapunzel's just so sincere that it's hard for Korra to say no.] Tell you what. If anything comes up and I really need someone to talk to, you'll be the first person I go to.

So, the island we're on now is Floater Island. This world is called Iniidae. Basically, there's a whole lot more ocean than there is land, so...islands. And our base is underwater, too.

[ it's the power of disney and the wide sparkling eyes. she seems like she might be on the verge of song half of the time. ]

Sure! I mean, that'd be great! Not that it would be great if you were upset, but, um, you know what I mean! I'd do my best to listen and bake you cookies maybe? I'm not sure if that's the way - is that what people do I've never really had a girl friend before I'm not sure but anyway. [ she got really quick-talking at the end there... ] How do we get back to your base? Do we swim? I'm...okay at swimming! I think.

[Korra's eyes widen slightly.]

Wait...really? You haven't really had a girl friend either? But you're so...nice.

Er. I've never actually had...I mean, I sort of didn't...have the opportunity?

[ tbh. ]

You're the first girl I've ever met! Besides Mother.

How did that happen?

[Korra's senses something amiss here. Even if Rapunzel had grown up in a small town, Korra definitely wouldn't be the first girl she's met.]

[ wow she did not think this through. but then again she has met all of how many people in her life? flynn rider and also. a tavern of ruffians.

I soooooort of grew up in a tower. Alone? I mean, Pascal was there, and Mother, but. [ a tiny, nervous shrug. ] It was for my safety! But.

[Korra exhales, pushing her hair away from her face.]

So here's something crazy. I grew up in a compound down in the South Pole. I wasn't alone like you were, but I didn't really meet anyone my age until about a year ago.

It was supposed to be for my safety, too. [She smiles ruefully.] I guess we have more in common than we thought.

[ why do all these old people keep locking up these teenage girls, animated canons.

rapunzel's eyes widen, but - it's probably the first time she's had anything in common with anyone. besides having a dream, that is, but - flynn had never been locked away, and neither he nor the ugly duckling guys knew about not knowing how things worked. ]

You...really? Then, um. [ a hopeful smile. ] Maybe we can be friends? If you want.

[Who even knows, but they should really stop.]

You don't even have to ask--of course! [Korra returns the hopeful smile with one of her own.]

I've never met anyone else who even had a similar experience growing up. It'd be...nice. If we could be friends.
