pulse, and other, open mingle (12-7 to whenever)

[Wowee! We get hit with a pulse on the seventh! Isn't that fun! Also, a ship crashed, and baby it's cold inside. Some prompts.

A: Pulse: A pulse hit the planet! Life support went out, and that super sucks, but it will only last for an hour. Maybe more sucky: some or all of your powers may or may not have died! That's awkward. Are you disappointed you can't walk through walls now? Has nothing changed for you? Are you now a dead girl because you made a deal some aliens? Are you a sword? Have fun kids, and try not to hold a Class Trial.

B: Salvage: That sure was a ship that went down! URSULA identified it as the Narcissus which is apparently a human military ship so obviously this will be safe and no one is going to come across any type of trouble salvaging the ship. Maybe someone should text Naoko to tell her what's going on. Everything is fine.

C: Blanket-sharing meme: You know what you're here for.

D: ETC: Roxy is putting up mistletoe, there are flowers, people keep building stupid things. Do whatever!]

[ooc: OOC post here??]
oneandmikleonly: (drifting over icy mountains.)

c for sorey and karkat; early in the month

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-09 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
[sorry Karkat. somehow or another you ended up in this blanket pile of people who like you a lot. somehow or another they are both leaned on you instead of each other. you are the meat in this enthusiastic movie nerd sandwich

on the other hand that means Karkat's holding the pad as the movie buffers and has full control of picking the actual movie. and stuff like the volume. and pausing it to yell at them if he must. they don't seem to mind that much]

This one's a romance, right?
imsorey: (This adventure is more than I)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-09 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Karkat loves and appreciates them and that is the only reason he puts up with them. also because he got to pick the movies, probably.]

It looks more like the romance is a subplot to the actual story. Hmm, how much romance does a movie need to have for it to be considered a romance, actually?

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ both sorey and mikleo are lucky that they are like in the top five of karkat's favorite people on the base who aren't dave. they are so, so lucky. ]

If the plot is carried by the romance then it's usually considered a romantic film. Like how in Titanic, the main focus is Rose and Jack and the whole hundreds of people dying horribly is a subplot. So the movie's a romance.
oneandmikleonly: (tonight the hills are watching.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-10 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That classification sure is weird. Wouldn't it be better to cross-categorize it, then? Like, a tragic romance, or a dramatic romance.
imsorey: (Could wait forever)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-10 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Romantic comedies are a classification, but that's the only cross-categorization that I've really seen for romance. And they're not even that funny usually. So I think the categorizations are off to begin with.
alienates: art @ nymphicus (Default)

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-10 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ karkat looks flat out offended at sorey saying they aren't funny. ]

Usually people just categorize them into a bunch of different ones. So if a movie is romantic and tragic, they might say it's a romantic drama or something. It depends? What do you mean they're not funny?
oneandmikleonly: (awakened by the sound.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-10 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, some of it's cultural differences, and some of it's, well...

[looks expectantly at Sorey; you opened this can of worms, you explain]
imsorey: (But here it is the knock-knock)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-10 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I just don't get a lot of the jokes! I do think it's a cultural difference thing. They've been growing on me since you showed me all of the good ones, but it's funnier if I have a reference for what they're talking about. It helps that most of them are set in New York, so I know a lot about the city now. Stuff like that.
alienates: art @ nymphicus (Default)

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-10 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a lot about New York now too.

[ since... karkat is not from earth so tbh a large chunk of the references in these films fly right over karkat's head unless they're either repeated enough times in different movies or if someone explains it to him?? ]

We're going to watch Moulin Rouge by the way. It's a musical.
oneandmikleonly: (where i let the water take me.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-10 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! I think this is our first one that isn't an animated film.

[peering at the screen over Karkat's shoulder]

"The year is 1899, and Christian has come to Paris to follow the Bohemian revolution taking hold of the city's underworld. And nowhere is the thrill of the underworld more alive than at the Moulin Rouge, a nightclub where the rich and poor men alike come to be entertained..."

Not New York, either.
imsorey: (Turn your magic on)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-11 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Sorey is looking up "Bohemian revolution" really fast]

Oh, Paris sounds nice though! It's the "city of love" isn't it?

It's supposed to be very romantic and they speak French there.

[ he says, as if that means anything at all to anyone in this room. ]
oneandmikleonly: (what a simple want.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-12 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be nice to learn a new language, though I'm not sure a romance musical is necessarily the best medium...

[Karkat please put the movie on before they derail hopelessly into nerddom]
imsorey: (Now our soul divides)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-12 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
If hamsters can speak French it shouldn't be that difficult to learn. The songs might even make it easier to remember, actually.

[reaching behind Karkat to nudge Mikleo's shoulder a little in protest]

Plenty of Disney movies have songs and romance incorporated into them and it's worked out, hasn't it? This probably just has a little more singing.
alienates: art @ nymphicus (Default)

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-12 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ karkat opens his mouth to comment on the hamster speaking french thing but then decides that nah. that probably makes sense? look, life is weird so hamsters speaking french isn't the strangest thing he has heard so he is willing to roll with it ]

Apparently this one got nominated for and won a bunch of awards, too.

[ but fine he will start this movie and also i chose it because i want them to cry ]
oneandmikleonly: (ask her what she'd like to be.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-12 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[mikleo sighs a little but just kind of. figures he might be meeting a new sentient hamster on the base soon. a bilingual one]

I just mean, songs don't really cover the basics and grammatical rules, though if one of those awards is for the music then--ooooh.

[falls silent as the introduction comes on, oh my]
imsorey: (Got you saying one last time)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-13 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
[whatever Sorey was going to say gets lost too; his mouth is still hanging open a bit like he was going to reply, but now he's engrossed with the opening scene and quickly losses his train of thought.]
alienates: art @ nymphicus (Default)

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-13 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[ their sudden silence actually takes karkat by surprise because most of the people he watches movie with do not know how to shut the fuck during said movies.

?????

THIS IS A STRANGE AND NEW EXPERIENCE. ]
oneandmikleonly: (ask her what she'd like to be.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-14 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[movies are generally fascinating okay. also they've consumed some animated movies by now and a few live action ones, but the surreal, theatrical styling of this one is definitely, definitely new. Mikleo doesn't break the silence until Christian starts writing his story]

...it's almost like a fairytale...
imsorey: (Turn your magic on)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The narrator being a part of the story is new, but it has a much more theatrical style than most of the other movies I've seen. It's like this one is much more aware of the fact that it has an audience.

[his voice is low, speaking during the brief spaces of silence as the movie sets the scene, and then he's nudging Karkat]

Is there a specific term for that in movies? For this kind of style, anyways.
alienates: art @ nymphicus (Default)

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a narrative device where the character speaks to the audience basically. It can be pretty common but there are a lot of times where it's used in films where it's not needed and it drags the whole story down.

[ he points at the screen ]

This is probably one of the best ways I've seen it implemented. It really adds to the drama.
oneandmikleonly: (her name is aphrodite.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-18 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The way they've set it up -- so it's neither entirely realistic nor entirely theatrical -- that's really something, too...

[leans back from the screen slightly as the actual Moulin Rouge and the Diamond Dogs are introduced, though, can-can dancers showing their legs everywhere; his next remark is barely audible]

I'm so glad Zaveid's not here.
imsorey: (Mikleo stop with the faces)

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-12-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe they can lift their legs that high. They must have had to practice this scene quite a few times to get it right.

[leaning towards the screen, impressed]
alienates: art @ nymphicus (Default)

[personal profile] alienates 2016-12-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ who the fuck is zaveid... karkat doesn't actually care. ]

Apparently all of the music was actually popular songs from Earth culture.

[ not that that really matters to any of the three here since they're not gonna know who the fuck beck is ]
oneandmikleonly: (meet me again.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-12-19 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[zaveid would have said at least ten racy things and been thrown out of the fort by now and it's been less than ten minutes of movie]

So that's the common theme! I was wondering why the various songs wasn't sounding as unified as, say, the Disney musicals were...

[trails off again as Satine's introduced, because that is a heck of an introduction]
