March Intro: Head First

≡U.R.S.U.L.A. NAVIGATION

Arrival!
It was supposed to be a routine mission. Maybe you think you’ve been here for a bit or maybe you just arrived. Either way, you know there was supposed to be a completely normal underwater mission, probably just gathering resources, unless you just arrived, in which case welcome!

Unfortunately, somehow you’ve been dumped somewhere you shouldn’t be. A woman’s voice can be heard, robotic in tone with hints of emotion. That emotion mostly seems to be mild surprise.

"Life signs detected. Life forms are non-native to this planet. They... oh. Oh dear, I wasn’t prepared after all. Please refrain from dying for a moment. Your things are incoming."

Your eyes open underwater. At least you're near the surface. But the moment you break through you'll notice one thing: the ocean, stretching out for miles around you in all directions with no end in sight and only a very distant gleaming metal structure in the far distance. You're not alone but this surely isn't what you expected. In fact, you really can't understand how you managed to get from where you were to underwater so fast.

None of your belongings are with you save the clothing on your body. And the depths below you offer no comfort, the light engulfed before it can reach wherever the sea bottom is.

Somewhere, you hear a sound shaking through the water, like something between a whale and a foghorn.

No turning back now.

Prompts!
A: WHALE OF A TALE
As it turns out, there is hope for those who can't swim or get help from someone who can. Something emerges from the depths, a massive bed of coral that makes that strange sound, allowing people to climb on top of it. Of course, that bed of coral is actually the back of a massive creature that moves how it pleases and occasionally dives back down underwater.

There is a pod of them around the area calling to each other. They're friendly, or at least they don't seem to mind any poking or hangers on. But one of their long tendrils may still give you a good whack on accident.

If you’re really lucky you can probably ride one all the way back to the base. Wouldn’t that be a fantastic entrance?

B: HELP ARRIVES
At least, some assistance arrives. Strange little robots on propellers arrive fifteen or so minutes later, rushing to the scene carrying a floating bin of some sort. They drop it into the ocean and buzz excitedly around it in the hopes of luring people over.

Inside the bin are goggles, breathing devices and knives enough for the new arrivals. The knives have a compass on the hilt that has a marker for the direction of the base. One robot will play a helpful recording from the robotic woman for those getting their gear:

"Please deposit any articles of clothing getting in the way of swimming in the bin. We will be sure they arrive safely at the base. Do not try to swim in anything that will bog you down."

A pause.

"Swimming nude is not recommended. There can be... unpleasant issues. For future reference, please consult me before going on missions like this."

C: UNDER THE SEA
Of course, there's no reason to rush right to the base. This place is certainly beautiful in its own right and has a few caves to explore - watch those stingers hanging from the ceilings - with an abundance of strange and wonderful fish eager to either play with you or dart away as fast as possible. Of course there's plenty of Reefbacks still calling to each other and a large amount of floating rocks with Floaters attached.

D: MATING SEASON
On second thought, maybe heading to the base is a good idea. Occasionally you might see plumes of dust near the ocean floor. Exploring these is a very bad idea. The moment you get close, a Sand Shark will explode out of the sand, ready to attack. They range from five to eight feet in length and will pursue you without mercy. At least they give up if you get near the surface or hide in the right caves.

Unfortunately, it's mating season. That means dozens of them can appear at any time trying to court a female with acts of aggression and skill. And you really don't want to be in the middle of that.

E: HOME SWEET HOME
You did it! You made it to the base. You are probably dead tired by now having swam quite a long distance—or somehow riding a Reefback all the way here—and the sun is beginning to set. Upon arrival, URSULA will welcome you and give you a quick rundown of the lockers (where your personal items can be found, as safe as if you stored them there yourself) and the base's layout if you’re new. She will also recommend that you put on your communication device and settling in. She will then just as quickly apologise by saying that she must finish preparing the base for the others.

"Please give me a few days to finish retooling the base. Oh, I'm so excited. We're going to make a great team, I promise. And don't go back to that biome yet until mating season is over. Sand Sharks are... troublesome."

F: WILDCARD
The ocean is yours to explore! Maybe your characters will find places to take breaks. Maybe they'll start gathering things. Maybe they'll murder fish! Or maybe they'll get lost in the dark and take a rather long time to find the base. Or just crash the kitchen for some of that delicious fish, more fish and seaweed! It's all up to you!

See the Biomes page for the currently accessible areas or details on current wildlife and the Base page for all your base needs. Direct any questions and plotting to the OOC post and have fun!

[Shiro makes his way closer. So someone else put dinner in his locker? ...wait. Shiro stops, turns to his own locker, opens it up only to sigh. No dinner.]

Looks like not everyone got dinner.

[He turns back to Fukami now and his plate of food. It smells pretty good, okay? And Shiro is hungry after all that work swimming. He's not the best swimmer, so it was a lot of extra effort if he's being honest with himself.

He'll need to learn better.]

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-02 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Well... He can see where this is going. Glancing down at the plate as though considering his options, another tentacle closes his locker door, the plate still poised on another tentacle.]

It may not be any good anyway. It's been a while since I made it.

[But it's RPG inventory food which means it never goes bad!! Or something.]

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-02 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Shiro has no idea how magic rpg inventories work. He does know how his stomach works, and currently it's growling. He watches the impressively dexterous tentacle before looking curiously.]

How long?

[And why is it in your locker if you made it, Fukami? If you're not the one who put it there. Shiro is full of questions.] It smells like it's still good anyway.

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-02 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
... Do you want to eat it and see?

[Fukami is eyeing him. IT'S PRETTY CLEAR he might have a food mooch on his hands right about now.

It doesn't matter to him either way, really. It isn't as though he's particularly hungry himself, and he doubts he'll eat this. And Wadanohara, Memoca or Dolphi aren't here for him to feed, so.]
undyingly: (6WZ2n)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-02 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
[The very first thing that Fukami ought to learn is that when you feed strays, it becomes impossible to get rid of them. And Shiro's eyes light up a little at the suggestion.]

Me?

[As if he hasn't been eyeing the food this whole time.] I wouldn't just want to take all your food. [Though...] But if you don't mind sharing, I could test it to make sure it's okay.

{Yeah. That's what he's going to do. It's a service. You're welcome, Fukami.]
octoroom: (pic#10006795)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-02 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not hungry.

[Truth.

But his eyebrow only lifts at that whole 'testing' bit. Sure. Yes. He believes that. He'll test it. That's something that kids use. He's heard Memoca use that one, that's for sure.]

...The dining room should be down that way. [With a tilt of his head.]
undyingly: (sparkledesu4)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-02 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm? Will you come too?

[Come and Shiro will try to get Fukami to eat too so he does't feel terribly guilty about stealing all his food. That wouldn't be polite.

Though speaking of polite, Shiro realizes he's gone and forgotten his manners, mooching without even an introduction.]

Oh! That's right. I should probably mention... [He dips a small, polite bow in Fukami's direction.] Isana Yashiro. That's my name. [...kind of.]
octoroom: (pic#10006806)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-02 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Fukami just nods. He'll come along too. He may as well learn the layout of this place properly either way.]

...Fukami.

[Another small nod, this one out of courtesy rather than an answer. And then, without further adieu, he turns and sets off down the hall.]
undyingly: (2vLjK)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-02 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Fukami then! It's good to meet you. [And then, because why not get friendly with the octopus man?] You can call me Shiro. People do.

[He offers another smile, heading along with the octopus down the hall. He watches him, maybe just a little interested.] It's not difficult for you to get around out of the water at all, is it?

[He remarks, curious.] I have to admit I'm a little envious of someone who can get by on land and in the water so well.
octoroom: (pic#10006780)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-02 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh dear, he's a chatty one. Fukami's used to being quiet, however, so a person to fill up silences so he doesn't have to is good. Except, Shiro's asking him questions and all.]

It isn't that difficult to get used to.

[Even Fukami, at one point, hadn't ever traveled above water... Before he was a familiar, of course.]
undyingly: (dSxmb)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-04 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
[He is. No help for it, Fukami. Shiro tilts his head to the side slightly.] You don't think so? I hope you're right.

All that swimming was really exhausting.

[He sighs as heavily as he can. Really. He needs a nap. And a meal. And then another nap.]

It didn't help winding up in the ocean before I was ready either.
octoroom: (pic#10006744)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-04 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
...It wouldn't have been any less exhausting even if you were ready.

[Just saying. They enter the dining room and Fukami pauses with a small, uncertain look around. There are just pods in here, not even tables. Huh.

His free tentacles coil but he approaches one all the same, eyeing it with a cocked head.]

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-05 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not.

[Shiro admits with a laugh and a shrug, still following along with Fukami, right until the dining room.

Huh.

A tilt of his head. Well, all right. They can probably make this work, right?]
This place is going to take some getting used to in general, even out of the water.
octoroom: (pic#10006753)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-05 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I would sooner stay out in the water.

[Fukami sighs as he looks at a pod. One tentacle ventures out, touching over it-- and oops, there it is opening up into a little table with seats and this is weird.

He eyes this now-opened pod.]

As a human, are you familiar with things like these in the least? [Who ever heard of tucking everything into a pod.]
undyingly: (2vLjK)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-07 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I imagine that's probably true. But you're in here anyway?

[But oh. LOOK AT THAT. That's pretty impressive technology, actually. Shiro slides himself straight into the now-it's-a-seat.]

These pod things? Nope. Not even a little. This is pretty high tech, I think. But as far as tables and chairs go, not too bad.

[He reaches over to pat a seat near him. Settle in, Fukami.]
octoroom: (pic#10006759)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-07 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
For now.

[He doesn't know enough about the wildlife quite yet to sleep outside, unguarded... not that he knows about the wildlife in here, either.

Fukami sets the plate he's carrying onto the table, eyeing the seat Shiro pats with some reluctance. But, he does sit, folding his arms across his chest.]

...I wonder if they keep any tea anywhere.
undyingly: (n5lXq)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-07 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Good. His new octopal has joined him! Success. Shiro smiles happily enough, eyeing the plate of food and then Fukami.]

Tea sounds really good. I wonder...

[Hmm.] Should we go poke all the other pods? Maybe one will have a kettle.

[Shiro is not above experimenting by touching literally everything.]
octoroom: (pic#10006748)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-07 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[No. Not octopal.]

...Eat. I'll look elsewhere.

[He stands as soon as he's sat down... is he looking for an escape?!]

I doubt there will be one in these. [For one, where would it fit in these pods? They're not that roomy. Hence he will look around.]
undyingly: (sparkledesu1)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-07 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Counterpoint: Yes octopal.]

Hey!

[Shiro is a multitasker. He'll grab himself up a drumstick and then, well, stand as well.]

I can help look. It'll make it go quicker, right?

[Right, octopal?]
octoroom: (pic#10009171)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-07 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[GIVES HIM A LOOK]

You should sit while you're eating.

[He jabs one of his tentacles pointedly at Shiro holding that drumstick.]
undyingly: (2vZlz)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fine. I can handle both.

[He's very talented at eating, Fukami. Not to worry. Besides, he figures manners can be put aside in the furtherance of helping a friend anyway, right?

Right.]

Do you drink tea a lot? How does that work underwater?
octoroom: (pic#10009170)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-07 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That wasn't what I was saying.

[Shiro, sitting and eating is polite! Be polite!! Fukami exhales quietly and leaves it be for the moment.]

Drinking tea works fine underwater where I live. Perhaps, where I'm from is simply different.
undyingly: (dSxmb)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-07 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No? What's the problem then?

[A curious tilt of his head even as he goes and helps himself to a bite of the food in his hand.]

Maybe so. I mean, I admit I've never tried it myself, but the physics of it where I'm from don't seem like they'd work. Unless the tea is a significantly heavier liquid...

[Science or magic clearly. Some mix of the both.]
octoroom: (pic#10006750)

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-03-07 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[Fukami just shakes his head. NEVER MIND. He doesn't know Shiro, really, he has no reason to babysit him.] Hm. It works where I'm from. I've never spent much time thinking about it.

...At any rate, let's look in another room.

[Since Shiro's going to go around and eat his drumstick.] How does it taste? [It doesn't taste weird after all? He's not spitting it out...]
undyingly: (rBkui)

[personal profile] undyingly 2016-03-07 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If it works, I guess that's the most important part.

But right, Let's take a look.

[Shiro shrugs and follows along, still munching.

The question catches him by surprise. It tastes fine to him. Why wouldn't it? It smelled good.]
It's good. Thank you again for sharing. It's nice of you.
