action ; open base mingle
It’s been about a month or so since people started arriving to this world and onto the base—a month of shenanigans, exploration, danger, angry sealife and other things. In this still-small base, there’s all kinds of things that characters can do so, therefore, consider this an all-purpose base mingle post.
prompts:
(These prompts are loose so you can make your own prompts for people to tag out of them. Make headers, tag around, use this post for whatever you like!)
prompts:
→ i. it’s a fixer upper
[In the wake of the Aurora explosion, there were quite a few things that needed repairing. Even then, the base itself is by no means complete, with limited room and not even rooms for each and every person. Luckily, there aren’t all that many living in the base! Yet.
But, there’s always something to do. Are you helping with repairs? Trying to decorate the base somehow? Building something new that can add to it? Perhaps you’re one of those in the laboratory, researching what species that this ocean has to offer. Hopefully nothing else is blowing up.
Or are you just standing around, staring wistfully out at the ocean and not contributing at all? I mean, that’s fine, but…]
→ ii. catch of the day
[How’s that seafood? What? You have no idea how to cook it? Well, then.
It’s probably like sushi, where you can eat it raw, right? Or maybe you’re one of those bringing back fresh supplies to the base. Possibly still wriggling around fresh supplies. Can you actually (miracle of miracles) cook some of the fish/other things that are probably fish so that they don’t taste half-bad?
If all else fails, just munch on some seaweed. I hear it’s nutritious.]
→ iii. it’s like a giant sleepover
[Surely there’s nothing awkward about cramming yourself into one of the ‘free’ rooms around the base with your air mattress and curling up there. Have you set out a space for yourself? Found a nice spot where you’re usually alone but uh-oh don't count on that for too long?
Perhaps you’d rather just sleep in the hallway to avoid drifting off near others.
Maybe you just don’t sleep at all or you prefer roaming the base when it gets dark. Nightmares about sea creatures can be a doozy.]
→ iv. choose your own/wildcard option
[What else has your character been doing? Go wild!]

[The good thing about being Fukami is that you can carry a lot of things. The bad thing about being Fukami is that... you can carry a lot of things. He's collected scrap metal from some of the nests not overly far away as well as other supplies, and these are currently being held in his tentacles.
...But it makes it difficult to move around.
Sorry if he just bumps right into you. At least he's quick to be polite about it if he does, with a brief:] Excuse me.
ii. someone order takoyaki
[No, just kidding. Fukami's not on the menu, octopus or not.
However, he is proficient (luckily for you, who happened to come into the kitchen at this time) at cooking. He has ten arms to work with, after all. Eight tentacles and two regular ones. All of which are in motion doing something if you come in at this time.
He'll merely spare you a glance but, if it looks like you're going to rummage through the cupboards on the hunt for something to eat:]
...This will be finished in a moment. [Oh. Dinner invitation.]
iii. once upon a dream i guess
[Most people should be asleep at this hour so where's Fukami--
Well, depending on what you'd like to do, there are two further options here:
1
He's roaming the ship, as it were. He's quite quiet in general, so it might be hard to notice him until you come up right on him. He stands in one of the halls, staring outward into the ocean with an unreadable expression on his face.
2
He does have his air mattress set up in one of the free rooms. However, he's about as close to a wall or a corner as one could physically get without fusing with the wall. Here he's reclined with his back against it, his hand lifted so that he can idly click through the portable device strapped about his wrist with the other hand.
He doesn't seem like he's about to sleep... and he's about as far from any others as he could get. Hm.]
iii - 2
Well.
Without waiting for invitation, Shiro drops his bed down right next to Fukami's and then drops himself onto it with an impressive fwump of a landing for his size.] Aaaaaah it's been a long day hasn't it? Are you ready for bed, Fukami?
no subject
... Yes.
[But, more importantly:] You know that there is plenty of room in here, Shiro. [He needn't set up his bed so close...]
no subject
Mm! Plenty of room. That's good right? Better than not enough room. Especially if anyone else ever shows up here. I wonder if anyone will, thinking about it.
[Seems he missed Fukami's point entirely. Or well. Shiro is probably clever enough to know exactly what Fukami was getting at. He's likely just chosen to ignore it.]
no subject
[The thing is that they've had an opportunity to talk and slowly get to know one another. And in that time... Fukami has come to the decision that Shiro is not, in fact, an idiot. Truthfully, he doesn't mind him that much. That's a secret, however.
Shiro's playing dumb just gets a long, unimpressed stare. As though to say you know better than that.]
...I chose this place in the hopes that few, if any, would come here. [Pointed? What are you talking about?]
no subject
Well. Here's your few.]
I see! So it's lucky it's only me, right?
[Two's company!!]
no subject
Is that lucky?
[Dry it is. AREN'T YOU GLAD HE LIKES YOU, SHIRO!!!!]

[ Well, yes, he did bump into her... but that was polite, and he is carrying a lot of things?? So Cardia's hardly offended. ]
Do you... need help with some of this?
no subject
Cardia. [A belated acknowledgement, and Fukami inclines his head briefly.]
If you have the time to spare, I would appreciate it.

[One tentacle extends toward her, and it will uncurl to deposit a little heap of scrap metal (mostly intact), into her hands when she lifts them.]
no subject
Where are we going with this?
no subject
[He gestures with a tentacle and, once her hold on her load is affirmed, he'll lead the way.]

[ presumably, Octopus #2 arrived in the kitchen with similar intentions - to make something to eat for himself. However, if given the option to sit on his caboose and have someone else make something for him? He's sure as hell taking it. He might have even tried looking a little sad and injected a sigh into his cupboard rummaging to make himself appear more in need of table scraps.
Of course, he's not acting like he did that. ]
You'll share your food with me, Fukami-kun?
no subject
I have enough cooking here so I may share.
[His tentacle stretches over to put the kettle of water on. He'll even make tea. How polite. Though he's preparing seafood, part of Fukami wishes there were ingredients or other such supplies to make sweets in the base. There's nothing like a nice plate of sweets with tea...]
no subject
Nyuoh! Thank you! Thank you so much, Fukami-kun! I'll remember your kindness forever! [ clasping his suckers together in gratitude. You'd think Fukami just offered to revive his dead girlfriend or something. But no, he just really likes getting free food... ] By the way, what are you making?
no subject
...Shark.
[What an unsurprising answer.] Or, I suppose they're called 'stalkers'. [Shark is a nebulous term anyway.] It tastes good when fried like this, with a salad. [Seaweed salad.]
no subject
Fried shark and seaweed salad, hmm? That sounds delicious. [ he can't wait to mooch some!! ] I suppose you have plenty of experience cooking with aquatic ingredients, don't you?
no subject
Even with ingredients from land. Because there were islands close to where I lived.
If we find ingredients for them, I would make sweets.
[Because Fukami enjoys sweets and tea... Shocking, right? (His other favourite food is just really bloody steak so take from that what you will.)]

[ oh.
um… before the offer had been made, roderic was going to hope for the best and find coffee in the cabinets, somehow, and try to power through the evening with that alone but.
actual food was good. better, even, if lie's insistence was true back home. he closes the cabinets gently, suddenly aware of just how much racket he was making then, and turns to face fukami proper while he did his magic. ]
Thanks. [ he rubs the back of his neck, feeling a bit inadequate since he was just standing here with an empty cup in his hand. ] Need any help with that? Settin' the table or anything?
no subject
Fukami turns his head slightly to glance at him over his shoulder. He doesn't really need to look for his tentacles to work anyway, lightly moving the pan back and forth on the stove so that the fish keeps cooking.]
...If you like. That would help. [He nods.]
I THOUGHT I TAGGED THIS I'M SORRY
what hasn't give the runs yet can only make him strright. proper manners, roderic.
nodding back, he starts to rifle through the cabinets in search of plates and cups, spoons and forks. all that you need to eat like an actual being. it doesn't take him long to find the items and he recklessly piles them up in his arms while he makes his way over to the table. if ursual isn't tutting at his existence than he thinks he's good. ]
So um- [ conversation wasn't his strongest point but he had to to try and talk with others here. they were going to be here for a while after all. ] You do this regularly for others? Back home at least?
no subject
[Welcome to the "conversation's not our strong point" club!! Well, it's not that Fukami can't hold a conversation, he just... doesn't, most of the time. Whoops.]
I cook for my master and for Memoca and Dolphi.
no subject
[ he starts to get things straightened on the table while he speaks, trying to appear casual but the tension on his shoulders stay. what is casualness. he sure wouldn't know with how he's approaching this with the carefulness of detonating a bomb. ] The others. Your, um, friends and... master, I mean.
[ kind of weird for him to say aloud but he's not gonna question. he's seen enough weird shit back home to know he just has to go with the flow. less of a headache in the long run of things. ]
no subject
[Fukami refocuses on the food he's cooking briefly, his tentacles lightly moving it about the pan with a spatula. Handy things, tentacles.]
And yourself? Do you have anyone familiar here?
