action ; open base mingle
It’s been about a month or so since people started arriving to this world and onto the base—a month of shenanigans, exploration, danger, angry sealife and other things. In this still-small base, there’s all kinds of things that characters can do so, therefore, consider this an all-purpose base mingle post.
prompts:
(These prompts are loose so you can make your own prompts for people to tag out of them. Make headers, tag around, use this post for whatever you like!)
prompts:
→ i. it’s a fixer upper
[In the wake of the Aurora explosion, there were quite a few things that needed repairing. Even then, the base itself is by no means complete, with limited room and not even rooms for each and every person. Luckily, there aren’t all that many living in the base! Yet.
But, there’s always something to do. Are you helping with repairs? Trying to decorate the base somehow? Building something new that can add to it? Perhaps you’re one of those in the laboratory, researching what species that this ocean has to offer. Hopefully nothing else is blowing up.
Or are you just standing around, staring wistfully out at the ocean and not contributing at all? I mean, that’s fine, but…]
→ ii. catch of the day
[How’s that seafood? What? You have no idea how to cook it? Well, then.
It’s probably like sushi, where you can eat it raw, right? Or maybe you’re one of those bringing back fresh supplies to the base. Possibly still wriggling around fresh supplies. Can you actually (miracle of miracles) cook some of the fish/other things that are probably fish so that they don’t taste half-bad?
If all else fails, just munch on some seaweed. I hear it’s nutritious.]
→ iii. it’s like a giant sleepover
[Surely there’s nothing awkward about cramming yourself into one of the ‘free’ rooms around the base with your air mattress and curling up there. Have you set out a space for yourself? Found a nice spot where you’re usually alone but uh-oh don't count on that for too long?
Perhaps you’d rather just sleep in the hallway to avoid drifting off near others.
Maybe you just don’t sleep at all or you prefer roaming the base when it gets dark. Nightmares about sea creatures can be a doozy.]
→ iv. choose your own/wildcard option
[What else has your character been doing? Go wild!]

[Mai's used to seafood, she really is. She's from Japan, she likes her seafood, she's had all sorts of it prepared in all sorts of ways--
But what she's not prepared for is tentacles and eyes and when she sees it move on her place (probably just nerve endings, if she would've thought of that), she can't help the muffled noise of distress.
And she drops her plate.
Oops, good job, Mai--hopefully she didn't make a mess on you.]
iv: so about those stories
[It's stuck on her mind, her conversation with Sorey on how to make this place a little more homey. Now that they'll be living here, it's important, isn't it? So Mai's thoughtful for a bit, but a gathering like this...it's perfect, isn't it? So a demure, uncertain otome protag is coming up to you now (yes you), and asking--]
Um, excuse me... do you mind if I ask you about stories?
[Maybe they can still collect some books, and make this place more enjoyable to live in. It'd be worth it to see Sorey happy if nothing else, she thinks.]
no subject
[What a helpful echo there Shiro. But he's looking at Mai curiously now. The question has certainly caught his attention anyway. And piqued his interest. And truth of the matter is, he's lived long enough a life to know some stories.]
I mean of course I don't mind! What do you want to ask?
no subject
[Let her fumble to get out a notebook first GOTTA TAKE NOTES.]
I guess I was just thinking... maybe if we could collect stories from all of our homes, then we could have more nice things to read, and this place could feel...well, a little homier.
[She's aware it's hardly a pressing problem at all, so she ducks her head a moment later--it's kind of silly.]
no subject
[Shiro is totally on board and all smiles now that he knows what she's talking about. And he knows stories; heaven knows he's been around long enough to have heard a few.]
I could tell you the ones I know from when I was young. [When he wasn't a young Japanese teenager and was instead a small German boy pre World War II.] Though they might be pretty common, if that's okay.

[He doesn't mind, of course...
Fukami turns to better face her, his arms folded over his chest, his head inclined forward. Stories is a pretty broad thing to ask about, so.]
no subject
[That's not helpful, Mai. She folds her hands quietly, tilting her head.]
I was just thinking... maybe if we could collect some stories, then....we'd have something to read...?
[It's a silly plan, but it's a very Mai plan.]
no subject
[Is that a pleased note in his voice...?]
I see. I would like to be able to read something besides what notes on what we've learned.
[Reading is a hobby!! What a shocker, right? For someone as quiet as Fukami.] So, any stories, is it... [He's going to have to think, though. Perhaps he can make one up.]

Nyu? Stories? I'm afraid I'm not sure what you're referring to, Mai-san.

She's feeling a bit more comfortable around him now, though, so she just smiles a little sheepishly, shuffling in place. She knows it's silly, but...]
Um, well... I was thinking... maybe if we could collect a lot of stories from peoples' homes here, we would all have something to read...? And um--if we have more to read, it might be a little homier in here...
[Since they all have to live here anyway.
Mai: focusing on the important things in life.]

Ooh! What a wonderful idea that is. [ this girl is a gentle soul, isn't she? Rather than trying to make weapons or find out which creatures are the most edible - or worry about death by radiation sickness or drowning, like he sort of is - she's concerned about making people happy. And he's far from making fun of the idea. Happiness and gentleness are very important things. ] You've come to the right person! This Sensei is a veritable treasure trove of heart-pounding tales.
[ there's some laughter in his voice, but he seems earnest at the same time. ]
Of course, I'd be happy to tell you any of them! What sort of heroic exploits do you want to hear about?

What sort of stories? [Although she's not really sure she even knows that many...]
no subject
U-um, well...any sort of stories!
[That's not helpful, Mai.]
I think... a wide variety of stories would be a good thing, so... I'd be really happy to hear any stories you want to tell.
no subject
Is it okay if they're not normal stories? [She's not sure how else to put this.]

What about stories? History, or fable, or...?
no subject
Oh...anything, I think. I was just thinking--um, it was talking to Sorey-san that made me think of it, actually, but...we're going to be living here for awhile, right?
So I was thinking...maybe if we had some books or stories to read, it would be a little more homey.
no subject
It's true; just lab notes make for dry reading after a while. You're looking to compile the stories people know?

[ Her mind doesn't immediately leap to novels and the like, coming from a culture of heavy oral traditions. That she even knew how to write in Elvish had to do with the position she was once training for, and reading and writing in the common tongue had been necessary, not for pleasure.
But boy, are stories not a part of her life, including the truly unbelievable ones. ]
Are you collecting them?
no subject
[Any sort of stories are good, she'll take anything--so she nods a little sheepishly.]
I was just thinking that... maybe I could collect a few stories, and then write them down...and then people could read them whenever they want, if they ever get... you know, overwhelmed by this place.
no subject
Sounds like it'd almost be worth coordinating story-sharing sessions. I'd say over a campfire, but... we're lacking that technical capacity.
[ Not even one hearth to be found... ]
Either way, it sounds like a fine idea. Do we have much paper and ink to spare at the moment? Perhaps you could practice telling the stories you learn until we do, if there's not some hidden around in the cupboards here.
